Hello all,
My son leaves the house daily and does not turn off the lights. What is the best and most reliable method of detecting when he is gone?
Thanks,
Lane

Obviously your doors should lock themselves until Homey disengages the lock after your son switches off the lights
.
All jokes aside, depending on your WiFi router’s brand, there may be a Homey app that allows you to detect whether his phone/tablet is still connected to the WiFi. I use e.g. the Asus app for this purpose.
Alternatively there are also generic Homey apps that offer similar functionality, like the Smart Presence app.
lol… funny. I have a UniFi network but I find that the UniFi apps are buggy or don’t work. Was looking for something else. I’ll have a look at that Smart Presence app, thanks.
I have a flow that I can trigger to set myself home or away. I then use the shortcuts app on my iPhone to run the homey flow when I come home or when I leave. This works really well!
The advantage of this is that i don’t need to give the homey app access to the location services. No app has to be running in the background for this. I use the native iOS algorithm to determine whether I’m home or not, which I find very accurate always.
That’s a good approach @dsdevries I wouldn’t be able to setup the kids phone with that solution.
I tried the Smart Presence app suggested and it is perfect. Shuts off the lights in the basement when the kid leaves home.
Great idea!!!
I can’t use advanced flows. Am I correct?
Tim
You can use advance flows for this, however it doesn’t add much. In order to trigger an advanced flow you need to add the start button to it. Each advanced flow can only have one start button. So you would still need to create individual flows for each of these actions.
Therefore in my homey, I have a folder called actions. These actions are used to expose functionality to the outside. They are all very simple in their essence. They all start with the card “when this flow is triggered”, and they all just set a state in homey. This state is then used by all advanced flows. This is my why to loosely couple homey to other systems or apps.
