Danfoss Ally - devices stop responding

Hi Carl
Can you exemplify how you have made the flow? I have Danfoss thermostats in my summer house. I have made a simple flow to turn (set right temperature) on these and other stuff. There is another flow for turning everything off. I have little experience of this.

I wish I had read this thread before I ordered 4 Danfoss Ally thermostats. They are working horribly unreliably with Homey Pro.

Just some issues I have encountered so far:

  • Pairing is awfully difficult. I have to reset thermostat a couple of times before their pair and pairing takes a very long time
  • Many times when temp is set, the temp setting in the Ally is something random. Like when I set it to 21 it becomes 32 or something like that
  • I have had 3 of the 4 thermostats suddenly disconnected. Sympton is that they stop sending the temperature to Homey. In Homey it looks like you could adjust the target temperature, but these commands never reach Ally
  • App is missing the ability to set external room temperature, which is supported by the Ally thermostat itself. And for example Home Assistant has the ability to set external room temp for Ally thermostats
  • App is missing some of the key attributes - with Ally hub you can for example set the display reverted which is handy in vertical installation

And Homey dares to recommend Danfoss Ally radiator thermostat in their best buy guide! Looks like they havenā€™t even tested it. And the ā€œinsult to injuryā€ is that the Danfoss app is developed by Athom themselves!

One theoretical way to connect to Danfoss Ally would be through the Danfoss Ally Gateway. The downside is that Danfoss Ally Gateway only support a cloud API and not for example Matter. And there is no Homey app that would connect to Danfoss cloud API. If there was, then we could forget about the unreliable Danfoss Ally Zigbee connection and use the cloud API happily.

I have been looking into how to develop that kind of app myself, but it all looks a bit complex still. Letā€™s see.

Ally still not works with Homey.
Homey teams update the app, and it still not works. After seval years.
The horible app is still in the list. so many new uses also waste their time.
They recomend it in their best buy.

Remove it from the app list.
Bad behavior.

Even when you manage to pair the Danfoss Ally radiator thermostat with Homey, then this happens. Because I didnā€™t trust the target temp setting, I set it regularly every 5 minutes with the exactly same temperature. But what gets set is a random number between 6 and 33 degrees. See the picture. This is insane. The Danfoss Ally app for Homey is complete rubbish.

I have tested with 3 other hubs and they integrate to Danfoss Ally radiator thermostat without issues. 1) Danfoss Ally Gateway obviously works perfectly, 2) Aeotec Smartthings hub works well after adding a community made driver and 3) Cofizy, which is a less known finnish hub also works well directly with Ally. So I wonder why is it so hard for Athom to get this right.

Iā€™m experiencing the same issue with ally. Sometimes the set temperature can be any number between 7-40 Ā°C.

I have tried to solve the problem like this: Instead of setting target temperarure regularly,
I made a flow to check regularly, if the set target temperature is correct. And if not, then to set the right temperature.

This seems to smooth out the thermostat and the set temperature will not fluctuate as much. I hope there will be a more reliable way to control ally thermostats sooner than later.

Funny - I reported this to Homey, but they say they are not able to reproduce these issues with Danfoss. This is really odd taking into account how many people here in the community forum are struggling with Danfoss thermostats. They adviced me to uninstall and reinstall the app, which of course removed the devices and broke the flows as well. Did that, so letā€™s see how long it takes before the connection breaks again.

I would suggest anyone having these issues to report on the issues to Athom.

A year ago I reported the same thing and Athom just came back with the same arrogant answer. But I talked to a HA user and he said the same prolem occured in Home Assistant. So it seems it is a Danfoss issue and not only Homey Pro. But I dont understand the attitude for Athom. In this case they suck big time.

Ok thatā€™s an interesting piece of information that Danfoss has also failed with HA integration.

To be honest I have never fully understood why Danfoss want to keep their ecosystem so closed. Ok there is an API but thatā€™s proprietary and requires someone to build an app. Yes there is Zigbee but Danfoss has somehow messed that up.

Danfoss really should try to implement Matter for their Gateway.

I am also owner of 9 pcs of Danfoss Ally devices that has problems with integration to Homey Pro.

As other experiences the set point is more or less a random value when I send a desired set point in the flow.

After several days of trying I have decided to run my Danfoss outside Homey.

I hope some day that itā€™ll work. I would like to use door contact to cut off heating whilst windows and doors are open.

I have returned my Danfoss Ally TRV and got my money back. Performs terrible with Homey Pro. Now I just noticed POPP sells exactly the same product. They call it : Smart TRV Z701721. How is that possible? Any experience with that product?

I hope you have reported your Danfoss Ally issues to Athom. I did and they said they canā€™t reproduce the problem. Maybe they would try again if others also reported the same problem.

I have the same problem and I just reported the problem to support.
Seems it works for a day and then it gets all mixed upā€¦
Itā€™s a shame since the TRV is really good at regulating, a lot better than my noisy Netatmo TRVsā€¦

I join the choir of unhappy people that lose connection and get faulty temperature settings when it does connect.

This really sucks. Installed two for testing. All was good for the firs day and i bought 12 more.
Guess whatā€¦ 1 is working fine, the rest is crap.

:disappointed_relieved:

This doesnt help, but also I had one TRV that seemed to be working fine. Until also that one cut the connection 1 month laterā€¦ I have 5 in total now. Zero of them are connected to Homey at the moment as Homey just doesnt work with them.

I ended up with a Home Assistant insteadšŸ˜€ Works great for the TRVs and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Seriously thinking about moving the rest to HA also. Havenā€™t got any response from Homey supportā€¦

I am considering buing Danfoss Ally for my vacation apartment, to just be able to turn down the heating when I am not there and turn it up before I go there.

Main reason for considering it, is that it have been reported to be quiet. If if fails in Homey, than I go for the gateway, I can live with that, but will be irritated.

I have read many reports about people who has added Ally to Homey and it works great.
That makes me wonder: can this be FW version related? Is it possible to update the FW?
Is it possible to check the version? Does this have to be done thru the gateway (as IKEA devices?) maybe?

I have all Ally TRVā€™s updated to latest firmware through Ally Gateway. I would recommend not to even try Ally with Homey. You would just be asking for trouble.

I tried to find reports of people using them successfully but found none? All I found was reports of people having the same problems, ie. random settings. I tried uploading FW and it didnā€™t help. Then I moved them to Home Assistant and now they work.

Strange, in the Swedish Facebook group ā€Homey homiesā€ there are a couple of persons having no problems at all, while there are zero users having problems (that I am able to find)
