Connecting Shelly 1L Gen 3 and 2L Gen 3

For those of us in the UK or old houses in Europe that don’t have a neutral wire at the light switch, Shelly have now just released this new, updated piece of kit and honestly it is just amazing!

It works so much better than the Sonoff ZBMiniL2 that I had been enduring for the last year or so.

Anyway I started this thread as it took me a minute to figure out how to connect my 2L to my homey, and so I thought I would share the solution for anybody else who purchases one and struggles.

The Shelly app on Homey currently says that it supports ‘Any Shelly WiFi device’, the 1L & 2L aren’t listed specifically as supported devices. When you go to add the 2L through the ‘any Shelly WiFi’ device though, you will receive an error message saying this device isn’t supported yet and to contact the developer.

The work around I found is to use Matter.

In order to do this you first need to install the Shelly device using the Shelly smartphone app on your phone.

Once you have done this, you can find the Shelly device’s IP address in the Shelly smartphone app (click on the device, then network settings (the the symbol that looks like a globe) > WiFi 1, and you will be able to see the IP address.

The IP address is a link, so you can either click on it or type that IP address into your web browser and you are then connected directly to the Shelly device.

Click menu > settings > firmware. and then update the firmware. once you have done this you will be prompted to refresh.

Now that you have done this you should have Matter installed on it.

still on the Shelly, click menu > matter and then enable matter. i think it then asked me to reboot it again, and then using the Matter Code I could add the device to the homey.

In homey devices> + > new device > Matter and then type in the code for your shelly device and it will import the shelly device.

I hope this helps!

Mods: I’m sorry if this isn’t in line with the rules. I searched to see if I could find another thread on this topic and couldn’t find one, but I figured as its a new product a few people may have the same issue as me so I thought I would save them the struggle

Matter

Homey supports all Matter devices by default; the device list on the store page is solely to indicate Matter support availability of the device.

However, why the Shelly WiFi and Bluetooth devices are not all listed as individual icon images like the other devices, I have no idea.

Thanks for the instructions!

Did you also reach out to the developers and request them to add these devices as WiFi devices to the Shelly app for Homey? Would be nice for the benefit of all  .

You can contact them, via the indicated e-mail address, which is also included in the dedicated Shelly app section on this forum: [APP][Pro&Cloud] Shelly.

Yeah I’ve sent them an email, but I figured I would let everyone know a way to connect without having to wait for them to add it.

It works flawlessly by the way, so it doesn’t feel like a backdoor work around :+1:

Great! :+1:

In what way are they better? Could you share your experience?

I am also using the ZBMINIL2s (and the older ZBMINIs with neutral wire). Did not have any issues with them.

I beg to differ

Less latency.

I found the connection between my Homey and the Sonoff was VERY temperamental also, even though they are only about 4m apart and only separated by one stud wall.

Additionally the Shelly has the option to operate in ‘detached mode’ which is handy for smart bulbs, and it ‘recognises’ the switch position meaning it differentiates between ‘off’ and ‘on’, which appeals to my OCD of having the lightswitch in the correct position (you never find yourself turning the light switch off to turn the light on, or visa versa).

Based on your comment and your screenshot, I assume that you didn’t properly read and understand my post and didn’t click on “Show more” in the App Store and/or on “Supported Devices” in my post. The list behind “Supported Devices” is copied from the App Store, btw.

However, I agree with you that this procedure is confusing. But I already hinted at that.

I understood your point just fine. You’re just trying to reframe the conversation.

I said that it says that “it supports ‘Any Shelly WiFi device’”

You said “that is incorrect”

I then replied with a screenshot showing it saying exactly those words, verbatim.

I understand the point you’re trying to get across, I just took exception to you saying that what I had said was incorrect, when so clearly it isn’t as is demonstrated by my screenshot.

In fact, the device icon says “Any Shelly WiFi Device”, which is very unfortunate, misleading and doesn’t represent the fact. I agree with you and this should be changed. → @drenso!?
My intention was to point out that there is a list in the app description in which all supported devices are listed.

I had my 1L Gen3 connected via Matter for about a month. Pairing was a breeze.
However, a few days ago I lost the connection and tried everything to get the 1L back into Homey (reset, factory reset, Homey reset, etc.).
But Homey keeps hanging at the network connection step, even though the 1L is already connected and has an IP address.

After spending half a day trying, I gave up.
I’m now controlling the 1L via IP using a small JavaScript, which works fine, only downside is that I can no longer use the input triggers.

This works very well. Thank you for the clear explanation.
