I have a Canon i-sensys LBP122dw printer. I can monitor it via SNMP over the network. It has cartridge information and even logs for jobs. I can imagine flows for in case of print, or the ink level is low.
As far as I know, there are a ton of Canon printers with SNMP capability. I hope app would be available soon.
