Last Saturday, Paul Hibbert had another video on comparing different smart home hubs. It is so sad to see that an open source tool like Home Assistant does have integration with Tuya and Homey doesn’t. After following this entire thread I know why, but it is still sad.
@Doekse , has mentioned multiple times that in the background Athom is still working on a deal with Tuya, but are alternatives still being investigated? Like taking over the development of Tuya cloud App for Homey | Homey ? Or perhaps simplifying the integration with Home Assistant? For example that people only need to setup a simple Home Assistant machine for the sole purpose of acting as a Tuya hub.
Or is setting up an own server being re-evaluated? Homey has a subscription for a non-Pro version and a subscription for backups. You could add a subscription for people that want to use a Tuya supported Tuya app?
I’ve asked CoPilot for some help…perhaps this is a nice vacation project
There is an app for Homey to control Tuya. The source code is here on GitHub: GitHub - jurgenheine/com.tuya.cloud: Connect homey to the Tuya cloud I don’t know what language this app is written in and I am a newby when it comes to development and deployment of such an app. I want to accomplish the following: create a copy of this app, make some changes to be able to control my own Tuya devices using Homey and deploy it on my own Homey. If I am satisfied with it I would like to publish it to the Homey store. Can you help me with that?
From what I’ve heard from the Home Assistant team, Tuya hasn’t maintained it very well. It seems they kickstarted the project to build goodwill but haven’t really kept it up since.
I’ll have a look if I can schedule a meeting with them at IFA early september.
That said, I took another good look at the code used in the Home Assistant integration (thanks to a helpful tip) and came across this repo built by the Tuya team. It’s essentially what Home Assistant uses to handle Tuya authentication. I want to see if we can adapt this authentication method to get the integration working again. No promises yet, but I’m hopeful.
If you are still using the original ‘official’ app, I’ve been able to restore ‘out of action’ devices by deleting them and re-adding them. That does not invoke a password challenge so is still ‘allowed’ by Tuya. It does, however, mean flows and scenes that use the devices need to be updated (even if the devices are restored with the same name). I’ve also managed to add new SmartLife devices without any problem.
I’m one of your many customers a passionate fan of the smart home world and, above all, a happy Homey owner. However, I have a question for you:
Since Athom was acquired by a giant like LG over a year ago, and considering that you’re not only responsible for partnerships but also a business developer, why not initiate a development effort to release an official app for Tuya Zigbee devices? The current community app seems to no longer be maintained by its developer.
Doing so could really patch up this situation, where it’s quite clear that the responsibility lies with Tuya as a company. It almost feels surreal that a community ( as vast as it is but composed essentially of volunteers ) can achieve full access to the enormous Tuya ecosystem on Home Assistant, while we cannot, despite being backed by a giant like LG.
I truly hope my comment is taken in the constructive spirit it’s intended and that something can actually be done to fix what many of us see as one of the most frustrating issues affecting Homey Pro.
With respect, Luca Reina
Good to see that you end your message with “with respect”.
I am too really hoping Athom will at some point will be able to open up the world of Tuya (Zigbee) devices!
I do understand this topic is 1032 messages long, but please start scanning from the first topic and you will see that all your questions will be answered and all your remarks are being attended to. (Worst case ask gen AI to create a summary)
Traduzione (Inglese):
Yes, post number 1071 (written by “luca_reina”) in the Homey community thread explicitly asks Athom/Homey (addressing the message to “Doekse”) to develop an official app for Tuya Zigbee devices.
The author mentions the acquisition of Athom by a giant like LG as the motivation for undertaking this development, pointing out that the community app for Tuya is no longer maintained by its developer.

Sorry, but that was not my advise. Now you’re just asking Gemini to confirm your own post.
The advise is to read the whole thread. And if you don’t want to go through all messages the suggestion is to use Gen AI to summarize. Keep in mind: a lot of Gen AI requires you to scroll through the topic yourself first as after loading only the last responses are displayed.
The discussion revolves around the Tuya app for Homey, which initially showed promise with Tuya joining the Talks With Homey program, enabling an official integration without needing developer accounts. However, Tuya unexpectedly revoked API access, citing business security risks, and proposed a paid solution that Athom found unfeasible. This left the official Tuya App non-functional for new users and potentially future users, with Athom ceasing development and removing it from the Homey App Store. Users were directed to a community-developed Tuya Cloud app as an alternative, which requires a developer account and additional setup. Athom expressed disappointment in Tuya’s actions and uncertainty about future collaboration. The discussion also includes user experiences with the app, workarounds, and concerns about Tuya’s reliability and data security. Athom is exploring alternative solutions and collaborating with the community to support Tuya Zigbee devices. The situation remains unresolved, with Tuya not responding to inquiries, and the official app’s future uncertain.
It’s on the roadmap, we’ll likely look into this before the end of the year. Quite a few projects are ongoing with our development agencies, and they’re working their way through them.
A new app will most likely be created since we don’t want to break the current app for users where it is still working. Keep you posted!
