Alexa skill question, am I using it wrong?

Hi I am just wondering on how the Alexa skill so supposed to work, and also the other Alexa integrations. I revived my homey in June while the Alexa thing was still an issue and I’ve never he’d the skill fully work, or maybe I am just using it wrong. I would expect Alexa to be able to turn on and off lights and devices, and also know that when I say «turn the lights off» that i mean the lights that are in the same room as the Alexa.

I would also like Alexa to be able to starts flows. Before i had homey I used to be able to talk to my Alexa and have it turn off all the lights as I left the house. As well as play music in every room. But non of this is working reliably anymore. I current have a few virtual switches form different apps to try make it work, but it still doesn’t work all the time.

So I am thinking maybe I’ve misunderstood the Alexa skill or the 4 other Alexa apps, could someone clarify what does what and what i could expect. Or just tell me your setup and how you use it. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi Andreas,

As I understand it, there are two different things to distinguish here.

The Alexa app on Homey allows you to control Alexa using Homey Flows. For example: If the sensor on the bathroom door is triggered, then play music through Alexa (a Flow that has been created in Homey).

The Homey Skill in Alexa allows Alexa to recognize devices that are set up in Homey and to activate Flows on Homey. The Flows have to be marked as favorites in Homey so that Alexa can recognize them.

For example: Alexa, “Turn off all the lights” (the lights that are set up as devices in Homey), or Alexa, “Start Away Mode” (a Flow that has been created in Homey).

I hope this helps you a little.

Happy to be corrected, but I don’t think you can do that via Homey unless you create a routine operated by a phrase (but I wouldn’t use “lights off” as a phrase because that’s a special one for Alexas). Instead, use the Alexa app to put all the lights you want to connect to an Alexa in a group (if you have any controlled by a smart switch, use the Alexa app to change their type to light). Add the Alexa that you want to use to control the lights to the ‘Alexa Devices’ section of the group. You can then say “lights on” or “lights off” to the Alexa to control the associated lights.
