Adding IKEA Dirigera hub to Homey Thread network

Hey everyone,

IKEA’s Dirigera hub allows you to provide the credentials for an existing thread network so it can join it. This would effectively create a joint mesh with all the benefits that come with it. Annoyingly I can’t find where I can look up my Homey’s Thread credentials. Does anyone know how to do this?

I‘m looking for the answer, too.

Surely you just need to enter the Extended PAN ID of your Homey’s thread network?

No, you need the Thread TLV.

@robertklep : brilliant … what is the Thread TLV, if I may ask?

“Thread TLV (Type-Length-Value) refers to the structured data packets used in the Thread mesh networking protocol for smart home devices, where TLV is a common data encoding format (like JSON) to define network info, credentials, and capabilities, crucial for devices like Home Assistant and Google Home to securely join and manage the low-power network, enabling seamless device communication.”

Big thanks to Google for providing a service that makes it so easy to look these things up.

@robertklep: Thanks for providing the definition. And yes, I got the hint that I could have looked up the definition myself by using Google or any other service. Appreciation that you posted the definition none the less

How to get the Thread TLV ?

From Homey? No idea, I don’t think it’s made available.

I got them both now on the same Thread network. Dirigera now joined the network on which all my other devices are incl. Homey. One Thread network across Homey, Google Nest, Nanoleaf and IKEA. I did several things, not sure which one was the ‘winning’ action.

1. I added the Homey matter bridge app and in there I generated a matter code which I added into the Dirigera app as other device.

  1. The other way around: I used the Dirigera app setting ‘integration with other apps’ to generate a code which I enter in Homey as new matter device.

  2. I added a Ikea Matter device to my Dirigera.

  3. I then removed all Matter devices from my Dirigera.

  4. Rebooted Homey and the Dirigera.

  5. I added the Ikea Matter device directly to my Homey.

  6. I went to the setting of that Ikea matter device in Homey and used the advanced setting ‘share matter device’ and used this code to add the device to the Dirigera hub.

I may have done a few reboots in between, and not sure what option was the cause….. but in the end my Dirgera is no longer broadcasting/using it’s own Thread network and is now part of the existing one. I am using all latest version of Homey/Dirigera etc. So don’t give up… it is possible! Hope this may help.

How do you verify that Dirigera doesn’t make another Thread network?
Thanks!

In the Thread network settings of your Dirigera you should see the network it is using.

If you want an overview of all Thread networks you can see this in the Nanoleaf app. In case you do not have any Nanoleaf device, you can also download the (IOS) Eve Matter and homekit app. This does not require registration and can also show you all matters devices and thread networks.

Worst case try the Discovery - DNS-SD Browser and look for _meshcop._udp or _hap._udp. This will show you the available border routers and the NN= shows the used Thread network per border router.

Many thanks!

One step further with my testing.
I’m now using Apple tv as my TBR and was hoping that I could use Dirigera as a “fallback” if my main TBR disappear, so far no luck with that.
The test continue …
