What is the best motion sensors for Homey in 2024/2025?

What is the best motion detector now in 2024/2025?
Plejd has a WMS-01, will it work? It is tempting to test since it is supposed to have a lifespan of up to 10 years… I’m tired of my sensors from Fibaro and IKEA that either use special batteries or have poor battery life.

You mean the motion sensor with the longest battery life? Which is not related to it’s performance functionality (false positives, missing motion).

Yes, that’s correct, but the pros and cons of the sensor are also of interest.

I like Frient motion sensors and I have several of them. Really reliable and they never seem to leave the Zigbee mesh and always react immediately.

Not sure about the battery life since I haven’t really made notes when I have changed batteries, but probably couple of years.

Note that there are two versions. One has more sensors built in.

I use some motion sensors from HUE.
The big advantage is that normal AA batteries are used.
The battery life is several years, but I have also switched off or restricted the settings for LED notification, lux and temperature.

I have several motion sensors in high traffic areas in the house (hallways etc) which to make my automations work the way I need them are set to short motion timeouts and high frequency of updates, which of course drains batteries fast. For these I use Z Wave sensors from Aeotec (such as the multi sensor 6 / 7) because they have the option to permanently power them using a USB power supply. You then have the challenge of running a USB cable to them from somewhere with either a plug socket for a USB plug or permanent live and neutral where you can use a USB power module cheaply available from Amazon or wherever which you can wire in directly.

Thanks, I’ll try the Frient sensor, that seems to be a reasonably priced device :+1:t2:

so i’ve been searching for and trying different sensors. The best I have are the mmWave 230V powered devices from aliexpress using zigbee. They trigger fast and really report occupation.

the drawback is that everytime I order a new batch then the have new/different product IDs and are not recognized by Homey apps

I tried the neo coolcam, two of them, on zwave but they last approx 6 months on their battery.

I have different ubiquiti cameras, most of them outside, and use them as motion sensor. This works really goodeveb with the smart motion triggers especially for people and vehicle detections.

I now have the ubiquiti USL motion, but thats really garbage compared to the mmWave. You also need an additional IoT gateway (868mhz). Detection is really slow and its not a present detection. Its only usable for real zone teaffic detections.

so I swear by zigbee mmwave, i’m now buying the mmwave sensors (wifi versions) and try to replace the tuya controller by a ESP32.

No judgement, but a little note on your recommendation:
Because mmWave sensors continuously send very much events, it’s possible it can choke someone’s zigbee mesh, causing unreliable and/or delayed commands.

I would recommend wifi based mmWave sensors because of that.

hi peter,

thank you for your comment. I have no other zigbee devices so really cant tell. But I totally agree with you.

I prefer to have everything on ethernet, wireless or wired.

You can also use a few Tuya ZigBee bridges to add the sensors to different Zigbee networks, this saves some bandwidth for your Homey ZigBee network.
