First of all, a little introduction. My name is Eric, I’m 46 years old and I live in Goor, in the Netherlands. I have been following this forum for quite some time and have always found it a great resource. However, since my Homey has always worked reliably without issues, this is actually the first time I have ever needed to post a question here. I wish it were under better circumstances!
I’m hoping someone can help me out, or at least confirm if others are experiencing the same issue.
Last night, at 01:54 AM, my Homey Pro (Early 2023) automatically received a firmware update to version 13.2.2-rc.2. I did not initiate this update myself — it was pushed automatically by Homey overnight. Prior to this update, my device had been running stable on 13.2.1 for days without any issues.
After the update, my Homey stopped working completely. Here is what I am currently experiencing:
The LED ring alternates between solid red and solid orange
The device is not visible via Bluetooth
The device is not visible on my Wi-Fi network
The recovery page at recovery.homey.app is unreachable
Hard reset attempts via the button on the bottom have had no effect
The device is connected via Ethernet, but removing the cable (to force Wi-Fi fallback) made no difference
I have tried the following:
Multiple power cycles (unplugging and replugging)
Holding the bottom button while reconnecting power to enter recovery mode
Accessing recovery.homey.app from multiple devices and browsers
Removing the Ethernet cable
I can prove this is directly related to the automatic firmware update, as my Homey backup history clearly shows the update was installed at 01:54 AM — right before the device became unresponsive.
I have an active online backup on my Homey account, so my configuration is safe. However, the device itself appears to be completely bricked at this point.
Has anyone else experienced this after the 13.2.2-rc.2 update last night? And does anyone have any tips or tricks I might not have tried yet?
I have already submitted a support ticket to Athom, including screenshots of the backup history as proof of the automatic update. Given that this was a Homey-pushed update that appears to have bricked my device, I am also treating this as a warranty case.
I don’t have a real solution to your problem (i’m sorry to hear this happened to you) but have you tried to factory reset your Homey pro and then restore your last backup just before the 13.2.2-rc.2 version?
Hi, thanks for your reply and suggestion, I really appreciate it!
Unfortunately that is exactly the problem — I cannot get into the Homey at all anymore. The device is completely unresponsive and I have no way to perform a factory reset:
The recovery page at recovery.homey.app is unreachable
The device is not visible via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi
Holding the button on the bottom while reconnecting power does not result in any change
So sadly there is no way for me to initiate a factory reset or restore a backup at this point. The device appears to be completely bricked after the automatic update to 13.2.2-rc.2.
And using the small hole on the bottom? You can pin a small needle inside and keep it in for about 20 sec once all lights show red and than after that the hard reset is completed?
A hard reset via the button on the bottom does not work. When holding the button while reconnecting the power, the LED ring stays orange and never turns red — which would normally indicate a successful hard reset. No matter how long I hold the button, the ring simply stays orange and nothing changes. This confirms that there is no way for me to recover this device at home.
Is the ring breathing orange? If so then you have successfully put your Homey in recovery mode. You can connect it via the USB cable to your computer and install the latest stable firmware.
After multiple attempts I finally managed to restore my Homey using the USB recovery tool. Most of the time I couldn’t get it into recovery mode at all, or it would drop out of recovery within a few seconds. But persistence paid off — it’s up and running again like before!
I also turned off the experimental updates, which apparently were enabled without me realizing it, so that issue is resolved as well.
Thanks to everyone who helped think along with me — this is a great forum and a fantastic resource for getting people back on track quickly. Really appreciate it!
Glad to hear that you were able to restore your Homey.
A final consideration: you might want to turn of automatic updates of stable Homey OS firmware as well (in the mobile app More tab → Settings → Updates).
This gives you time to check e.g. this forum on possible issues reported by other users that might be relevant to your setup too.
That enables you to skip an update or install it manually at a later point in time, after creating a full offline back-up via the USB tool. An offline backup enables you to go back to a prior stable version of the firmware, which is not possible via a cloud backup.
