To Homey or Not

Hello All. I have an Apple Home with two Apple TV 4Ks, three HomePod Minis, a bunch of Matter over Thread bulbs, Lutron Caseta switches throughout, thread motion sensors, and multiple temp/humidity sensors. I currently use HomeBridge to get the Unifi cameras into Apple Home.

I have avoided Home Assistant for years because I do not want to deal with the complex setup issues. I have recently heard of Homey and see they have a self host server option. I am thinking about setting it up on a Raspberry Pi 4 that I have HomeBridge running on. I assume Homey would replace HomeBridge?

I also have a very specific use case I want to use. I have the Unifi G6 Entry doorbell camera, it supports Apple Wallet to unlock Unifi locks via their hub. I would like to use that feature to unlock a Nuki lock. I do not want to install the Nuki keypad on the outside of my house right beside the G6 Entry. Is Homey able to complete this integration? I have seen online people use Home Assistant for this, but again I do not want to deal with Home Assistant.

What are the other benefits to using Homey? Thanks all.

No, because Homey does not support unlocking via Google/Apple Wallet apps. AFAIK there are no smart home hubs that support this

Automation with Advanced Flow and HomeyScript using multiple device brands (apps). Homey supports many devices, including your UniFi camera and Nuki lock. You can control them all from 1 app, with easy to use Dashboards.

SHS also has a 30 day free trial so you can try it first without purchasing

I want to add to this comment of @smarthomesven.

Currently I have the Unifi Doorbell G4 Pro at home and an Aqara lock on my door, which also supports unlocking with Apple Wallet. I had to add the lock to Apple Home to be able to configure Home Keys. So, the lock is both in Apple Home and Homey. Now, that’s not that special, everything is within Aqara at this point.

Now the doorbell part, the G4 Doorbell Pro has a fingerprint and NFC reader, I have fingerprints added through the Unifi portal. In my Homey I have this flow to unlock the lock.

  • When a fingerprint is detected.
  • Unlock door and send a push notification to everyone who unlocked the door.

I would immagine, but not sure as I don’t have a G6, that the G6 doorbell uses the NFC version of my setup for Apple Wallet unlocks.

So my answer would be maybe. It’s worth the try.
