I (will) have a Homey Pro set up in my home, using a number of Zigbee devices. In another location on my property, which has an Ethernet link to my home LAN (via fiber), I would like to have additional Zigbee or Z-Wave devices. This second location is too far away to be reached by any radio communication device. What can I connect to the Ethernet cable in this other location that will allow Homey Pro to see either Zigbee or Z-Wave devices?
I’ve read replies to a similar question in the Forum, but haven’t been able to understand whether or not there is a sure, practical solution.
Only by adding an other (old) Pro to the other location, and create it’s own zigbee mesh network.
(It’s not possible to bridge zigbee over LAN)
It’s devices can be integrated to the ‘main’ Homey Pro using the Homey Link app, this works locally but via internet as well.
The ‘feel’ is if it were devices paired with the main Homey, and can be used in flows etc.
Of course you can add for example a Hue or Ikea bridge to the other location instead, but then you can be limited to devices of their brands.
Note:
What you had in mind is possible with zigbee2mqtt. You can add an ethernet antenna and bridge zigbee signals that way.
Combined with Homey: This creates a separate zigbee network, and these devices can be added to Homey with the zigbee2mqtt community app;
But, you’ll need additional hardware (or if your NAS is able to run Docker instances).
I think it’s a matter of budget, and willing to add a new system next to Homey.
I must say zigbee2mqtt is from another planet compared to Homey zigbee. I can 100% recommend it.
Because your 2nd location is so far away, it will probably not be able to connect to your zigbee mesh.
(Unless younare able to add multiple routers in a row)
But you do have a LAN, so you can build up a second mesh by placing a different bridge that can connect via LAN and is able to connect to homey via cloud (a hue or other)
Peter, I completely understand your two suggestions prior the the NOTE: in your reply. Then I’m lost. Would you explain what you mean by an ethernet antenna, and how that would bridge zigbee devices? Thanks.
Yes, I should have looked at that link when you first responded. But you are correct - it’s all a bit above me. I’m thinking the Homey Pro Mini would be a good solution, assuming I really can have flows in the Homey Pro work with devices communicating with the Mini. Thanks for your help.
