Because Homey doesn’t support updating devices OTA.

Yes, in theory it could work. But I wouldn’t recommend updating through anything else than the manufacturer’s gateway, since you likely won’t get support/warranty if you upgrade through an unsupported gateway/method.
No. The firmware files also need to be accessible, and not all manufacturers make them available.
Also, “only” suggests that this is a simple fix, but OTA updates for Zigbee is something that users have been asking for for many years and yet they never materialised, so it’s not a simple fix.
Firmware files shouldnt be that hard to find. I hope they implement this. My old system futurehome have this feature. If they have the knowledge i highly think the homey team have the brains to figure this out!
They are pretty hard to find, as almost all manufacturers lock their firmware files to their own gateways. That’s understandable, as they don’t want to get warranty claims or support tickets about devices bricked by f.e. a bad method of uploading from another gateway.
