Homey on Shelly displays - what happened?

I came across this video https://youtu.be/4n3K8Y5aqzA?si=P6r2XHjodBwgnuae&t=1680

It’s a Shelly webinar for installers also featuring Abe (the Head of Partnerships at Athom) saying how they’re bringing Homey to shelly displays as a native app. No hacks, side loading APKs, using third party apps etc.

What happened? It’s now been 6 months since the video was uploaded to YouTube yet no progress or any kind of announcement?

EDIT: Homey running on Shelly shown here https://youtu.be/4n3K8Y5aqzA?si=rlMGOVHsvGxfSnDj&t=2026

Does the Shelly display have a Play Store? In that case you can just download any smart home app

It doesn’t have the app store. There are a few topics/tutorials here on the forum showing how to install Homey, running android debugging tools, side loading specific versions of Homey APK etc. Not super complicated but also not simple to achieve with a laggy result (and running outdated Homey app). There’s even a Homey app that mimics Homey dashboards on Shelly via Shelly’s native Home Assistant integration.

What I linked is Athom saying they are optimising Homey app specifically for Shelly displays.

The biggest issues we faced when enabling support for the Homey mobile app on the Shelly Wall Displays are basically:

  • Performance: Unfortunately, performance isn’t quite what we expected, which can make the Homey app feel quite sluggish on the displays.

  • Google Play Services: The Shelly Wall Displays don’t come with Google Play Services onboard, while our mobile app currently depends on these for quite a few things.

For now, we’ve basically put this on hold until we can offer a solution that works well on these types of displays.

You can definitely use the pre-loaded Homey APKs that Shelly provides on the displays, but unfortunately we can’t offer official support for them at this point.

That’s strange, I would expect a mainstream product like that to at least have a Play Store to download apps from. Right now the displays seem to be limited to only the specific apps that Shelly provides (not sure of other methods though since I don’t own one)

That’s what I suspected. I guess a wall mounted tablet will always be a better solution than proprietary displays that require workarounds to run Homey, that are less powerful than an average tablet and three times more expensive than a tablet.

My biggest hope for Shelly was their cheap 4" screen. That’s the perfect size for kids’ bedrooms, where they only need to control two blinds and three lights. A full size tablet would be overkill for that use case.

Maybe one day…

Thanks!

Cheers,
Alex

I’m using the app of @Andi with a shelly Wall Display xl. Works great and Andi implements Feedback very fast  i know it’s a community app but a great one

I’ve seen that one and tried it in a browser. It looks promising, and I might finally have a reason to get a 4" Shelly Display to use with that app. I wish Athom originally went the web based dashboards/widgets way.
