Elko VVB and firmware update

I have an ELKO device for VVB on/off. However it have started to shut down 7-10 minutes after being turned on. ELKO support was first very answering saying that a firmware update is needed and they would send a hub to me to do this. But, that is weeks ago and still nothing.

Anybody who knows anything around firmware updates on ELKO devices?

In the meantime I have disconnected one of the heaters putting the VVB down from 2000W to 1 heater only (possibly 700W) and it seems to be stable this way.

Which device is switched with the ELKO device is only of secondary importance. The question is, which ELKO device is being used? Btw., what is VVB!?
If you could provide us with the exact model name, we could attempt to determine which system could be used to perform a firmware update, f.e. Zigbee2MQTT, assuming it’s a Zigbee device.
However, you will need additional hardware, as firmware updates are not (currently) possible with a Homey. Feel free to contact Athom for more information.

Hi! The VVB on ELKO page here. Smart VVB Puck - elko.no

I didn’t found the device in the list of supported devices from Zigbee2MQTT nor in the following database, which lists several Zigbee systems:

Maybe it’s the only way to update the firmware with the ELKO SmartHub at the moment.
Therefore, my suggestion would be to contact ELKO support again.

I was released early 2023 I think. At least that was when I did buy mine. My question is - how to update firmware on such devices?

I can only repeat myself and try to explain the problem a little more clearly.

As I mentioned already, there seems no possibility to use open source systems like Zigbee2MQTT, ZHA, etc. yet. These open source systems are generally capable of updating the firmware of Zigbee devices with a suitable Zigbee controller, as long as the firmware is provided by the manufacturer of the Zigbee devices. But the ELKO VVB Puck isn’t listed in any of my sources.

Therefore my suggestion, to contact the ELKO support again and ask them, how to update the firmware.

ELKO has before answered “you need to borrow an ELKO hub to update the firmware”. This is the reason for my question - mostly thinking in general - how does “smart home solutions” being a mix of lots of different units do this. From you answer I read “ normally all firmware for all known units are to be automatically updated by the Homey device”. Correct?

If yes, I plan to reach out to ELKO again since they do have some kind of support for Homey and ask why they have not listed the device. Do you see other ELKO devices? It do appear in the ELKO app on Homey.

Absolutely not! That’s not what I said or meant!
In my first post, I already mentioned that Homey is currently unable to update the firmware of Zigbee devices.

And because ELKO support didn’t help you and didn’t send you an ELKO hub, I looked for other solutions/systems that could be used to update the firmware of your Smart VVB Puck. However, I couldn’t find any other systems.

So please contact ELKO support again, as I already suggested:

Thank you for the clarification.

This to me “say” => the current status of home automation using Homey is will be problematic in the long run since devices are not kept up to date. E.g. if I have one 2023 and one 2025 device they might be same and different at the same time which will at some point in time create an issue.

Yes and no.
If there are no problems with devices, you do not necessarily have to update the firmware. According to the principle: “Never change/touch a running system!”
But of course, it would be a great if we could update Zigbee devices with Homey if needed.

If you want to know why this has not (yet) been implemented in Homey, please contact Athom Support.

However, there may still be certain limitations, even if Homey could in principle be used to update the firmware of Zigbee devices!
A firmware update is only possible if the manufacturer of the Zigbee devices make the firmware available. And as I have already tried to explain several times, systems other than Homey also seem to be unable to update the firmware of the ELKO Smart VVB Puck. At least, I haven’t been able to find any information about it. This could mean that ELKO doesn’t make the firmware public and a firmware update is only possible with their ELKO Hub.
Fibaro, a manufacturer of Z-Wave devices, does not publish the firmware for its devices either. This means that the firmware of Fibaro Z-Wave devices can only be updated using their smart home hubs.

So please contact ELKO support again, as I already two times suggested.
