Hi everyone!
My name is Emmanuel Katto. I’m new to Homey and excited to start automating my smart home. I’d love to hear your experiences and recommendations regarding setting up automations. What are some best practices you’ve learned? Are there specific flows, devices, or apps that you find particularly useful in achieving seamless automation?
Any tips for troubleshooting would also be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Best,
Emmanuel Katto
Hard to provide specific advice for your situation.
It’s tempting to start with simple flows but, as you get more into automations, you’ll value the flexibility of advanced flows. Moving a flow from simple to advanced means re-entering, so I’d start using advanced ones straight away. If you have two or more simple, related automations putting them into a single advanced flow is tidier and might be helpful later on.
Apart from apps specific to my devices, the app I’ve found most useful is Chronograph. It opens up a new world of possibilities.

Andy
All I can say is that before buying any devices or planning automations, do a complete plan of what you want your smart home to be. If you skip this phase, it’s going to get costly.
Try to find a few brands that offer devices you need to automate your home. Read the reviews and check the combability with Homey (official or community app, when last updated?)
Think about what protocols you want to use (zigbee, z-wave…) and how you get best network around your house. Avoid bluethoot devices!
Without information you can’t automate, so you need sensors to provide information like temperature, humidity, CO2, Luminance, movement and so on. Those are the backbone of the system, and those devices should be reliable, since no automation will work if there is no right information coming to Homey.
I’m just a beginner myself, but have already made some costly mistakes
