[APP][Pro] SolarAssistant - Make the most of every watt your solar system produces

App integration to Solarassistant.

Testlink SolarAssistant | Homey

This is an initial release. Build by Claude @ my instructions.

To make it work you need:

  • A SolarAssistant setup (prebuild or running on your own pi)
  • Local IP of the SolarAssistant
  • set a local password on the SolarAssistant configuration page

Feed back is welcome.

App has been sent for certification.

hi, when I want to install SA to my Homey, I instalkl the app and then click install device, I can give my SA ip and password. But it does not work, I get the message cannot connect.

My SA is online, and on my LAN, http://192.168.1.116/ and I have my password for this webportal. What is going wrong here?

Thanks

edit; Sign in | SolarAssistant is this the password what is needed for this site/portal to login?

https:/ /solar-assistant.io/sign_in

@Philippe_Rosier Hi Philippe. You need to set a local password on the configuration page of the SolarAssistant.

  1. Go to configuration page

  2. Click on “Configure local access”

  3. Change/update the password

(username “admin” will remain, you only need to update password)

2

PS: Setting the local password will not affect your normal signin/login (email/password).

v1.1.0 – separate Solar, Battery and Grid devices for Homey Energy

Version 1.1.0 is available as a test version and has been sent to Homey for certification, so it will reach everyone after approval.

Test link: SolarAssistant | Homey EDIT: Now certified: SolarAssistant | Homey

Thanks to Adam S. for the suggestions for v1.1.0. With the new devices, Homey Energy can show your grid, solar panels and home battery.

What’s new

  • Separate Solar, Battery and Grid devices that Homey Energy understands
  • One shared connection per SolarAssistant unit
  • Clearer pairing messages
  • Fixed: devices added with a typed IP address showed as unavailable
  • Fixed: repair did not reconnect after changing the password

The app now contains

  • Overview: the original all-in-one device, unchanged. Your existing Flows keep working, and the custom Flow cards stay on this device.
  • Solar, Battery and Grid: add whichever you want. If you already have a SolarAssistant device, they are offered straight away without logging in again.

Good to know

  • The new devices start with fresh energy counters, so Energy may take a day to show kWh.
  • The Grid device counts as a “total home consumption” meter. If you already have a P1 or smart meter doing that, turn off “Tracks total home energy consumption” on one of them to avoid counting twice.
  • You need a local password on your SolarAssistant unit. It is not your solar-assistant.io login.

Inverter-specific values
SolarAssistant provides “total” values that are the same across inverter models, and the app uses those. Individual values (cell voltages, phase currents and so on) differ per model, so I can’t promise to support them all. If you need such values, my other app MQTT Bridge can bring them in through MQTT Hub (enable MQTT in your SolarAssistant configuration first).

If you are missing a value, tell me which inverter you have. A metrics dump helps, but please remove the serial number first. It it makes sense to build it into the app i will try.

What it looks like

I see I have 1.0.14. Will it automatically update to 1.1.0?

And: my SA also reads out my 3x JK BMS data. Can this also get integrated toward/in Homey?

And: in my SA I have also Auxiliary PV power, can this also be forwarded to Homey? + add the option in Homey to have 1 value as total PV power, (so PV power from the strings + Aux PV power combined)

I have a Deye Hybrid, with 2 PV strings, and a microinverter connected on the Auxilary (gen/MI port)

If you have auto-update enabled, the app will automatically updated. To update manually, you can open the App Store page for the app and click Install

Hi, and thanks for the questions.

1. Version 1.1.0 has been approved, so Homey will update the app automatically. Your current device stays as the “Overview” device, and the new Solar, Battery and Grid devices have to be added through Add device.

2. Regarding JK BMS and auxiliary PV. For now the app is limited to the “total” values SolarAssistant provides as topics, because they are the same for every inverter model.

Values that are specific to an inverter (like aux on the deye) I am probably not going to implement. I am not totally against the idea, but if I get a lot of requests for inverter specific values I could use all my time doing that

In stead I suggest you use my other app, MQTT Bridge | Homey , together with Ronny Winkler’s MQTT Hub:

  • Enable MQTT broker in your SA configuration first,
  • Then install MQTT Bridge and MQTT Hub on homey
  • Configure MQTT Bridge (add SA + Homey IP’s, and setup topic filters)
  • Create MQTT device from MQTT Hub

You can create one or more devices with any specific inverter (SA) value you want. It’s great for thoese “one-off” values, but takes a bit of work to setup.

You can find the topics (values) provided by SA with MQTT explorer on windows. Or you can login to your local SA to show the metrics/topics: http://192.168.1.xxx/api/v1/metrics/

EDIT: Afterthought: I think its possible to add a generic sensor device to my app. It will make it possible for you to choose a specific topic that your SA / inverter delivers. I will look into it, if it works I will publish a testlink later. It will be easier than the MQTT bridge suggestion.

@Philippe_Rosier

Hi Phillippe.

I’ve published a new testversion of the app (version 1.2.0). In the new testversion you can pick your own value/topic from the SA. It should automatically provide a list of all possible sensorvalues. It means you could pick battery data if SA offer the topic or aux values and add it as a stand alone device to homey.

Link: SolarAssistant | Homey

Just like in version 1.1.0 you have to add a new device, and then chose the new value device. You will then get a long list of values to choose from. You can add several at a time.

The values are included as sensors on the homey dashboard. So they will not/should not show up in homey energy dashboard. You cannot use it to add your aux pv readings as a secondary solarpanel (for that you would need the MQTT bridge/MQTT Hub setup mentioned above).

I will not ask for certification of the test just now. Will wait a little to find out if i like it or not. It means that if you want to try it, you have to install the test version manually from the link (no auto update for now).

Cool!

I could select serval sensors in 1 go.

Lets see when some data comes in on the AUX port/sensor. Now I think (have to find out) I can also create a value/sensor in solarassistant as = pv power+aux power. Then I can use this as TOTAL pv power

well, I actually found out that PROBABLY the PV power, in SA dashboard and also in Homey, is already mppt power + aux pv power…

Seems like version 1.2.0 works as intended. I have requested the test version to be certified so it will be pushed to everybody with auto update soon. Since 1.2.0 only adds a driver, your current app, flows and devices should not be affected by the update.

How to change inverter settings from a Flow (SolarAssistant app)

:warning: Be careful when you change settings. These are real settings in your inverter, and a wrong value can cause problems for your system. Only change settings you understand. The app only sends the value. It does not check that the inverter accepted it, or that the value makes sense for your system (an update to verify the changes is pending).

The app can write settings to your inverter through SolarAssistant, using the Flow action “Send [topic] = [value]”.

What you need

  • The SolarAssistant Overview device added in Homey. The action is only available on that device, so add it even if you use the Solar, Battery or Grid devices.

Using the action

In a Flow, add a Then card, choose the SolarAssistant Overview device and pick “Send [topic] = [value]”. Fill in the topic and value, for example:

  • topic: inverter_1/grid_charge
  • value: Enabled

Finding the topic

Every setting has a topic name. Open http://<your SolarAssistant IP>/api/v1/metrics/ in a browser and log in with the username admin and your local password. The settings are the entries with "group":"Settings" and could look like this:

{"name":"Grid charge","value":"Enabled","group":"Settings","topic":"inverter_1/grid_charge"}

Copy what is in topic into the flow card. The value shows what the setting is now, so use the same kind of text or number for the new value. Topic names depend on your inverter, so use your own list and not other people’s.

Write the topic in lower case, exactly as shown. Phone keyboards often capitalise the first letter, and a topic such as Inverter_1/grid_charge will not work.

A practical example: charge from the grid only when power is cheap

My Deye can charge the battery from the grid, but I only want that when the price is low.

  • Flow 1: When the electricity price drops below my limit, then send inverter_1/grid_charge = Enabled.
  • Flow 2: When the price rises above the limit, then send inverter_1/grid_charge = Disabled.

Checking the result

Open the metrics page in the browser to see the current value is what you set, or look under configuration in SolarAssistant it self.
