Hello Adrian,

I have a Sofar ESI-12K-T1 three-phase inverter (12 kW) with a 5 kWh battery, and I am using your Sofar Homey app version 1.1.55.

Homey has already created an inverter device named with the inverter serial number (317615…), and this device works correctly and provides several values such as current power, daily production, daily consumption, internal temperature and heatsink temperature.

However, when I try to add the other devices — Battery (Sofar), Grid (Sofar), Home/Inverter and Solar Panel (Sofar) — pairing always returns “Nothing return”.

I would particularly like to retrieve:

  • Battery SOC
  • Battery charge/discharge power
  • Grid import/export power
  • PV power

I have generated a Homey diagnostic report.

Could you please check whether the ESI-12K-T1 is correctly supported by the app, or whether a different register map is required?

Good morning,

I have a SOFAR Hybrid Inverter ESI-8K-T1.

I have the app installed and active. I can also see in the app log that the app detects the SOFAR inverter, but unfortunately I am unable to add it to the app.

What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have any idea how I can resolve this or help me get it connected?

My setup consists of:

  • SOFAR Hybrid Inverter ESI-8K-T1
  • 15 kWh battery storage

I have just published a new test version that should have better error logging to provide the reason the requests failed rather than just showing null.
All my searches suggest your inverter should have the same register map as the sofar_g3hyd, so it should be found and the null error message suggest a communications issue rather than a register mismatch.
So, could you install version 1.1.56 and try again.

OK, so the fact that not data is returned means you logger is lot responding. make sure it is on the same IP range as Homey or that a suitable bridge is configured to allow two subnets to talk to each other.
Make sure the logger is configured to enable local access.
Make sure the Modbus ID is set to be the same as you inverters.

Hi Adrian,

Sorry for the amount of information. I’m an RF systems specialist and analyst by profession, so I can’t leave a problem like this alone. To save you reading my earlier messages, here is one consolidated summary.

SHORT VERSION

  1. Via the LSW-3 WiFi logger (port 8899) the connection is accepted, but the logger closes it right after the request (0 bytes), also without Homey involved.
  2. The inverter’s own Ethernet port answers plain Modbus TCP on port 502, and the register map matches your sofar_g3hyd probe: register 1156 returns 5001, which is 50.01 Hz grid frequency (0.01 Hz scale). But the app only probes port 8899, so it cannot use this route. There is no port or protocol setting in the app.

SETUP

  • Inverter: SOFAR Hybrid ESI-8K-T1. Modbus address 001 and baud rate 9600, checked on the inverter display.
  • WiFi logger: LSW-3, firmware LSW3_15_MQTT_270A_1.10, Web Ver 1.0.24, IP 10.10.0.253. Working mode: Data collection. Internal server: TCP-Server, port 8899. Serial port 9600/8/N/1. Inverter brand: Sofar_G3.
  • Inverter Ethernet port: 10.10.0.30 from my DHCP server.
  • Homey, my Linux test PC and both devices are on the same network (10.10.0.x), no VLANs.

HOMEY APP 1.1.56

  • Automatic scan finds the logger at 10.10.0.253 (logger serial number 123456789 as a placeholder). All register probes (sofar_lsw3, sofar_g3hyd, sofar_hy_es, solis_hybrid, sun3p, sofar_ktlx_g, deye_sg04lp3) return 0 bytes with slave ID 1, function code 3.
  • Manual device 10.10.0.30: ECONNREFUSED on 10.10.0.30:8899 for every probe. The Register Log tool gives the same result for 0x0484 and 0x0445 (8 registers).
  • The manual device serial field rejects the inverter’s own serial number, which contains letters. It seems to expect the numeric logger serial number.
  • The Settings tab only has Modbus Slave ID (1) and polling interval.

TESTS FROM A LINUX PC (Homey app not involved)
Logger 10.10.0.253:

  • nc to port 8899 succeeds.
  • mbpoll plain Modbus TCP (slave 1): “Connection reset by peer”, then “Broken pipe”.
  • pysolarmanv5 3.0.6 (Solarman V5, correct logger serial, slave 1, holding register 0x0484): the V5 frame is sent correctly, then the logger closes the connection (“Connection closed on read”). A logger restart did not change this.

Inverter Ethernet 10.10.0.30:

  • nc: port 502 open, port 8899 refused.
  • mbpoll plain Modbus TCP, unit 1, holding register 1156 (0x0484): returns 5001. This is the register your app uses for the grid frequency check on the sofar_g3hyd profile, so the value is 50.01 Hz.
  • mbpoll holding registers 0x0445 to 0x044C: returns a readable ASCII serial number (starts with SH1 and contains 8K), which fits the HYD register map.

CONCLUSION
The network, Modbus address, and baud rate are fine. The WiFi logger firmware (1.10) appears to block local Modbus access on 8899. From what I read, other users report only certain LSW-3 firmware versions work locally. The inverter itself is fully reachable via Modbus TCP on port 502 with the sofar_g3hyd register map.

QUESTIONS

  1. Can the app get a mode for direct plain Modbus TCP to the inverter (IP, port 502, unit ID 1) without a logger serial number? A configurable port would already be enough.
  2. If not, is there a workaround, for example another way to force the port or protocol?
  3. Is there anything else you want me to test? I can read specific registers with mbpoll and send the output.

I have published a new version that that should support MODBUS TCP as well.
There’s a new option in the app settings to select V5, Auto, TCP. The default is Auto.
Let me know if it helps.

Also changed the default port plus add options to change them.

Hello Adrian,

If I set it to V5, I can select some options, but it still does not work properly. It is now generating a huge number of log files (see below).

I deleted the logs, stopped and restarted the application, and the log below was generated immediately afterwards. It is now doing this every few seconds.

I get the same behavior both on 10.10.0.30 via the Ethernet connection and on the logger using the SOFAR Wi-Fi dongle at 10.10.0.253.

If I set it to MODBUS TCP, it appears to work, but I still get a huge number of log files and errors.

Below is the log from the MODBUS TCP configuration. The log file is growing rapidly, effectively doubling every one to three seconds.

Not sure whether you are aware, but please consider using the following options when posting logs, code, etc., to increase readability of your post:

  • Preformatted text option to keep the output in the original format and presented in a scrollable window. This reduces the length of your post.
  • Hide details option, to collapse/hide the entire interview output. Clicking the collapsed item will show the interview output again.

I will need to check as it’s strange it reads OK during discovery and then fails when added. I wonder if it switches back to V5. I had no way to test the TCP connection so it’s possible I have missed something.
