PELS Energy Manager - Power control and cheaper-hour scheduling for EV charging, heating and hot water
PELS is an app that helps keep energy usage within limits based on both concurrent consumption and electricity price. The goal is simple: lower your electricity bill and avoid expensive power peaks, without you having to think about it much.
In practice, PELS can monitor how much power your home is using right now, reduce lower-priority loads when usage gets too close to a configured limit, and restore them again when enough headroom is available. It can also do price-aware load shifting, so flexible consumption is moved more toward cheaper hours instead of only reacting when power usage is already high.
Daily Budget
PELS also has a Daily Budget feature. That lets you set a soft daily energy target in kWh and have the app spread consumption more intelligently through the day, based on your expected usage — and on price too, when price optimization is enabled. The goal is not just to avoid peaks, but also to use energy at better times when possible.
Changing the budget is preview-then-apply: you can drag a range, compare before and after side by side, and undo it if you don’t like the result. The chart can show either energy (kWh) or estimated cost.
There is also an optional weather insight. PELS can learn how your home’s daily usage tracks the outdoor temperature, and the evening before it will tell you whether tomorrow is likely to fit your budget — and either suggest a number or set it for you.
Smart tasks
You can also give PELS a specific goal and a deadline and let it work out the cheapest way to get there. For example: charge the EV to 80% by 07:00, or have a room at 21°C by the time you get up. PELS schedules the cheapest hours to reach the target while staying within your capacity limit, daily budget and device priorities, and it re-plans as prices and conditions change.
Smart tasks can be created from a Flow card or from a dashboard widget, and there is a history view that shows how past tasks turned out and why the plan changed along the way.
Solar
If you have rooftop solar and use Homey Energy, PELS reads your production and works from your net grid power. That means it automatically has more room to work with when the sun is out, with no extra setup, and the energy accounting stays honest when you export—usage is measured net, and the app can show the split before and after solar.
On top of that, PELS tries to soak up your solar surplus instead of exporting it. When you are producing more than you are using, it can raise a managed heater’s target so the extra energy is used at home rather than sent to the grid, keeping your export as close to zero as it can. This is opt-in per device and works best with flexible loads such as water heaters, and a charging EV will naturally make use of the extra room the sun gives you too.
Supported devices and use cases
The app started out mainly focused on thermostats, but it now supports a wider range of devices and use cases, including:
- thermostats
- water heaters
- on/off devices such as smart plugs
- heat pumps / aircon devices
- ventilation devices
- EV chargers
- virtual devices
It also supports different operating modes, so you can configure different priorities and behavior for things like home, away, night, etc.
Price sources
PELS can use different price sources depending on how you want to set things up. It supports:
- Complete Norwegian prices, including grid tariffs (nettleie) and other taxes, plus your choice of strømstøtte or Norgespris.
- Homey Energy as a price source
- Prices provided through Flow, for example from apps such as Power by the Hour
Flows, widgets and Insights
You can combine PELS with Flows in quite a few ways. For example:
- Changing modes
- Temporarily disable device management or exempt a device from budget restrictions
- Changing lighting based on Homey mode
PELS also comes with a set of dashboard widgets:
- Available power right now
- Today’s budget and prices
- Smart-task progress
- Create a new smart task
- Held-back devices, with a “Let it run now” option for anything currently paused to stay within today’s budget
Background
The app is heavily inspired by Piggy Bank, which I used for quite a while. That app worked really well for me for a long time, but since it has seemed unmaintained for some time and several features stopped working properly for me, I decided to build something similar myself.
