[APP][Pro] Device Capabilities - Enhance the capabilities of devices

Yes of course: Issue #121 .

Hello,

Already a couple of times I had the red ring lighted (breathing) at my homey pro 2023. I could still connect to my homey and no warnings in the timeline. No problems with the connected devices so far I could see. To stop the red ring light was to the set the spectrum light on and off.

After checking the forum I have installed Sysinternals App for diagnose. Now I think the problems are caused by problem that I running out of free memory, below 15%. After a while I noticed that at the same time I the Device Capabilities App has stopped working and I had to restart this app. I guess that this app was killed by Homey pro.

After looking in the homey developer tools I can see that the Device Capabilities App is using more then 100MB RSS and about 60MB PSS.

So I have a couple of questions.

Is this normal?

Can I lower the memory use of this app?

Why there is no warning that an app was killed by homey?

I use around 30 Apps at my homey pro 2023, is that too much?

Thanks in advance for you reply.

Arno

I’d say yes;
Pro 2026:

Comparison with other “greedy” apps:

Yes, lower the number of “When” cards, like “Wait for” or " Listen for". But DC uses more RAM @ my Homey, so maybe something else is troublesome.

You’d ask Athom.

It could be, but it completely depends on the number of RAM-hungry apps you have installed; some apps use 10MB’s, some other apps use 150MB’s.
Check the memory section on this page to get an indication:
https://my.homey.app/settings/system/general

An example of my Pro 2026, using 3GB of 4GB, with ~45 running apps → tip: disable apps you only need for a few minutes a day, like plants sensors, robovacs and such.

.

I use flows like this to detect disabled, paused, frozen or killed apps, and restart them automatically:

Make sure to enable “Power User” @ Experiments menu section

Oh no, iOS App v10 is destroying my 3 line device statuses. Only one line to display statuses in v10..! The horror!! Any hope for a work-around or tips from this community?

Yeah, I know. It’s a pitty. I noted this also and reported this to Athom a few weeks ago via TestFlight. Not sure whether they will address this point.

On the (new version v1.18.0 of the) web app the text indicator spans two rows. In the mobile app only one. For now I have reduced the amount of info included in the text indicator.

Hi @Arie_J_Godschalk,

I have an issue with the flow importer.

i have exported this TEF

TEF:

When I import it a few variable do not import correctly. When I look at the TEF it seems they are exported correctly.

And they did show in the list of variables

The variables show as “unavailable” after importing

Similar issues with another flow I exported

Can you check whats going wrong

Hi @Arie_J_Godschalk, I am running into a strange issue with Device Capabilities’ sustained values flowcard. A flow stopped working recently that uses that card as a trigger and I am trying to find out why it does not trigger anymore. I have other flows that use the same card that do still work.

This issue relates specifically to cases in which I am testing a sustained boolean capability.

The trigger of Flow 1 below has the issue. It tests whether a boolean capability Bypass open of an AVD is true for 5 minutes. The second flow performs a similar check, but based on the contact sensor of an actual door & window sensor.

The first flow does not trigger, the second does. I checked that the trigger conditions were met. The AVD logs changes in the boolean capability in the device log. So I know for sure that the Bypass opencapability wastrue` for at least 5 minutes.

As said, the second flow (based on an actual device) works. I don’t understand this as the arguments in both flowcard are similar and also the underlying JSON-representation of the flows seem to be similar.

I tried to restart my Homey Pro and restart the Device Capabilities app to no avail. The only recent changes are Homey firmware updates.

Do you have any idea what could prevent the card from triggering? Could it be that something change in recent Homey firmware updates that causes AVDs to behave differently?

Hi all,

i’m trying to make a Number field where I can set target_power. But I can’t find the right setting.

I can make a slider, but this doesn’t show the value:

I can make a target_temperature, but this looks strange with the ° symbol, but it does show the value:

In the SDK from Homey this function is described:

If someone has a solution, that would be very helpfull.

Thanks,

Hi,

great powerfull app!

Would it be possible to get the following ‘prefixed list’:
off, auto, heater, water

kind regards,
Floris

You can make such requests is this dedicated topic: Request custom picker for Advanced Virtual Devices from the Device Capabilities App.

If I recall correctly though, @Arie_J_Godschalk‘s plan is to make the pickers user configurable in an upcoming version of the app. So then you would be able to create your own custom pickers.

thanks for pointing this out. i thought i did the right thing based on the info in the info field

Yes I do!

Unfortunately my current health leaves me little room to finish it. But holidays are coming, and i hope (and expect) that ill have some time there to finish the update.

This one is newer than my last release, so its not an option yet.

Fortunately, a while back, I based the options on a npm from athom containing all classes and capabilities.

Once I update my version (see the above message) ill update the classes and capabilities to the newest Homey version.

Great news, thank you.

Other question, but maybe same answer.

Is there already a function to add a battery to the energy tab?

The device class is already ‘Battery’.

Hi everyone,
Maybe a dumb question, but…

I am having a bit of trouble managing some custom fields in an Advanced Virtual Device (AVD) using the Device Capabilities app.

A while ago, I created a few Number fields and checked the option to “Create Real field and Flowcards”. The fields work perfectly in my Advanced Flows, but now I need to either modify their formatting or delete some of them.

Here is the issue: I cannot find them anywhere in the UI to edit or delete them.

  • When I go to Maintenance → Repair on my AVD, the list under “Numberfields” is completely empty (except for a blank “Numberfield 1” template to create new ones).

  • The “real” fields/capabilities I previously saved are no longer visible here.

  • I also don’t see any option elsewhere to access access and to manage them.

How do I modify, format, or delete “Real” capabilities once they have been saved and hidden from the standard Repair menu? Is there a specific trick or a screen I am missing?

And also…

For all of my 8 number fields, I explicitly set the Decimals setting to 1.

  • However, when a value is a whole integer (like 27.0), Homey truncates the decimal and just displays 27 °C.

  • If the value has a non-zero decimal (like 27.1), it displays correctly with the decimal.

  • Is there any way to force the AVD to always show exactly one decimal place (including .0) for these real number fields?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi Layne,

I sometimes encounter the same situation, often a DC app restart “solves” it.

This is decided by Athom and dictated by the firmware. Please contact homey.app/support to discuss this odd stuff. It’s very annoying to me as well.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have already restarted the DC app a couple of times, but it made no difference. Maybe I should try a couple more restarts.

Okay, it’s a Homey thing that truncates .0 – that’s very annoying. Shouldn’t it be possible to force one decimal in the app in some way? Maybe use text strings instead of numeric values…!?

Edit: Several restarts done now. No difference. My “number fields” are hidden somewhere in the system, nowhere to be found

Edit 2: And boom… 20 minutes later the number fields appeared and I can now edit them.

Nice to hear it works.

You can force 1 digit, but Homey still will omit the .0 in numeric fields

A text string shouldn’t truncate a decimal 0 imho

I changed so all variables are text strings. Now the presentation of temp values are nicer with .0
