[App][Pro] Adaptive Lighting | Light that follows your natural rhythm

Will look into it, got to admit the flow cards aren’t tested that well yet

Edit: published a new version to testing

Success. Many Thanks.

Hi, first of all thanks for this great app. It’s simple and works really well. I ran into one issue with moods, though:

Setup

• Homey Pro, latest Adaptive Lighting version

• Philips Hue lights only, connected via the Hue Bridge (Hue app)

• Moods triggered directly in the Homey app

Steps to reproduce

1. Lights in a zone are off.

2. Activate a Homey mood (e.g. a color scene) for that zone, which turns the lights on and sets colors in one step.

Expected

The mood is applied and Adaptive Lighting treats it as a manual change, the same way it does when I change a light that’s already on.

Actual

Adaptive Lighting sees the lights turning on and immediately sends its adaptive temperature/brightness, which overrides the mood. I have to activate the mood a second time. After that, override detection works and the app backs off as expected.

Works correctly when

I turn the lights on first and then activate the mood. That case is detected as a manual override.

Possible fix idea

When a light turns on, wait a short grace period (e.g. 1–2 s) before applying adaptive values. If color/hue/temperature changed from the turn-on event itself (as with moods or scenes), treat it as a manual override instead of applying adaptive values.

For comparison: Lumina handles this case without overriding the mood.

Happy to test a beta if that helps. Thanks!

I might need to build in mood detection, personally I rarely use them so that slipped through the cracks.

however have you tried setting the turn-on sync delay in the light’s behavior settings? I doubt this will remedy the situation you encounter, but worth a shot.

I don’t have time to look into mood detection at the moment, but might have time later in the week.

Hi Waldo, thanks a lot for the quick reply, much appreciated.

I just tried the turn-on sync delay in the light’s behavior settings, but unfortunately, as you suspected, it doesn’t change anything. The mood still gets overridden when it turns the lights on.

No rush at all. Whenever you find time later in the week (or whenever it suits you), I’d be happy to test a beta or give you logs if that helps. In the meantime I’ll just tap the mood twice.

Thanks again for your work on this app, it’s really become my favorite for adaptive lighting!

Hey Alex,

I’ve found some free time in the evenings, so I’ve gone to work and implemented an (experimental) mood detection system which should enabled by default.

I’ve pushed a new test version to the Homey app store:

Hi Waldo, thanks a lot for implementing this so quick and sharing the test version!

I’ve tested it several times, but unfortunately I’m still seeing the same issue with my lights connected via the Hue Bridge.

What I tested

  • Activated a Homey mood while the lights were off.

  • Toggled the new “Mood detection” setting off and on several times and repeated the test with it enabled.

  • Restarted the app and tested again.

Result
The lights turn on with the mood’s colors, but shortly afterwards Adaptive Lighting takes over and replaces them with its adaptive settings. So the mood still gets overridden.

Possible approach
I vaguely remember that some Adaptive Lighting integrations for Home Assistant may handle this by intercepting the turn-on command and checking whether it contains only an “on” instruction or also includes brightness/color values.

If it only turns the light on, adaptive settings could be applied. If it also specifies brightness or color, that could be treated as an intentional manual change, leaving those values in place.

I’m not sure whether that’s actually how those integrations work, or whether Homey exposes the necessary information—just a thought that might be useful when investigating.

Happy to run more tests or provide logs if that helps. Thanks again for your work on this!

Hmm, that’s odd; it worked fine during my testing.

Regarding “shortly afterwards” when Adaptive Lighting takes over and replaces the mood’s settings: roughly what time frame are we talking about? Is it within a second, a few seconds, or closer to a minute? If it’s on the longer side, could you check whether the affected lights show orange dots in the app’s light overview?

Additionally, could you export and share the app logs, ideally captured shortly after Adaptive Lighting overrides the mood’s settings?

Finally, some details about the mood itself would help me reproduce the issue:

  • What types of lights are included?
  • How many lights are involved?
  • Are any of the lights set to “off” in the mood?
  • Anything else unusual about the mood’s configuration?

Hi Waldo, thanks for looking into this!
By “shortly afterwards,” I mean roughly one second after the lights have fully turned on with the mood’s colors. The dots in the app’s light overview are all green.

I’ve sent the app logs.

Here the details:

  • The room I’m testing in has five lights, all Philips Hue, connected via the Hue Bridge.

  • The test mood turns all five lights on and sets their colors. None are set to “off.”

  • It’s one of Homey’s standard moods, with no custom configuration or anything unusual that I’m aware of.

I also have a lamp connected to a smart plug, which only supports on/off. To rule that out, I excluded it and created a separate test mood containing only the Hue lights that support color. Unfortunately, the same issue still occurs.

Some of my living-room moods also switch certain lights off, but I haven’t used those for these tests—only moods that turn lights on and set their colors.

Happy to test anything else that might help!

Would you be able to try again with version 1.2.1?

The app didn’t recognize the moods at all, but I found some potential bugs that would prevent this.

Hi Waldo, thanks a lot for the update and for continuing to look into this!

I’ve tested version 1.2.1, and the good news is that mood detection now works perfectly! When I turn the lights on using a mood, they keep the mood’s colors and Adaptive Lighting no longer overrides them.

There’s just one remaining issue: Adaptive Lighting doesn’t resume after turning the lights off and back on.

Here’s what happens:

  1. I activate a mood while the lights are off.

  2. The mood is correctly detected, and the dots in the app’s light overview turn orange, indicating that adaptive lighting is paused.

  3. I then turn the lights off and back on using a simple on/off command, without activating a mood or setting any color or brightness values.

  4. Adaptive Lighting stays paused instead of taking over again.

I’d expect that normal off/on cycle to reset the manual override and restore adaptive lighting.

This is already a big step forward—thanks again for putting time into it! Happy to help with further testing.

Thanks for the quick reply, I think I know what’s happening there. Should be able to provide a fix tonight, or the latest on Sunday.

@Alex_Reisberger 2.1.2 should have some robustness fixes:

Hi Waldo, I’ve now tested the latest version several times with different lights, and everything works perfectly!

Mood detection reliably keeps the mood’s colors in place, and turning the lights off and back on normally now restores Adaptive Lighting as expected.

Thanks so much for your help and for working through this with me. Really appreciate the time and effort you’ve put into fixing it!
