Adding Friendly Names to Devices and Flows

I am new to Homey (December 2025), but have not seen any discussions regarding the topic of placing a Friendly Name on devices and the buttons of Flows in the Dashboard.

Peter Kawa was kind enough to give me a work around for Flow names, but a real enhancement would be of great benefit.

My naming convention was designed for development use and allows nice grouping and organization of my Flows, but to my wife and other family members, they are meaningless. As a result, it has become a barrier to their using the product.

If a Friendly Name field was added to the Devices and Flow metadata, when desired, the developer/manager of the home could reference that tag instead of the actual name in Dashboards.

I salute the attempt/ask. Athom might never reach the level of the global tech players in interface design. So I use Homey, but the family doesn’t “see it”. They interact with the house through Apple/Google home (speakers and apps).

I do understand and hope that Homey will in some small way attempt to be useful to the entire family. We, as you, use various devices such as Apple TV’s, HomePods, and various smart buttons. With the introduction of the Dashboard, my family was becoming excited that they could use their iPhones and iPads, which they always seem to have with them, to query and interact with our home. So far, the project is over-challenging for something that is so simple to implement.

I’m not sure what you mean as you can give a device any name you want and call a Flow whatever you want, so where does the friendly name come in to the interface?
