[APP][Pro] Opel Ampera-e (WiCAN) - battery and charging data via a WiCAN dongle

Opel Ampera-e (WiCAN)

Bring your Opel Ampera-e / Chevrolet Bolt EV into Homey with a WiCAN or WiCAN Pro OBD-II dongle. The dongle reads the car’s battery data and sends it over MQTT; this app turns it into a Homey device.

App Store: https://homey.app/a/info.schellekens.amperae

What you get

  • State of charge, charging power, AC charging voltage and current
  • Charging state (charging / plugged in / unplugged)
  • Battery and outdoor temperature
  • Minimum and maximum cell voltage
  • Usable battery capacity (kWh), battery resistance (mΩ) and charge cycles
  • Estimated range, based on SOC × capacity and your own average consumption (kWh/100 km)

The app is read-only: it never sends anything to the car.

No separate broker needed

The app has a built-in MQTT broker. The WiCAN publishes straight to your Homey, so you don’t need the MQTT Broker app or any other software. Already running a broker? You can connect to that instead.

Setup in Homey

  1. Install the app and add a device Opel Ampera-e.
  2. Choose Built-in broker, set a username (e.g. wican), a password and a topic (e.g. ampera-e/telemetry).
  3. Press Check port. The pair screen shows the address to enter in the WiCAN.

If another MQTT broker app is running on port 1883, switch it off first (or pick another port).

Tested WiCAN Pro settings (firmware 4.50)

Settings → CAN / MQTT

Setting Value
Protocol AutoPID
MQTT Enable
MQTT URL your Homey’s IP address
MQTT Port 1883
Security None (MQTT)
MQTT User / Pass same as in Homey

Automate

Setting Value
Vehicle Specific PIDs Enable
Vehicle Model Opel: Ampere-E 2019 (gives SOC, BATT_TEMP, AC_C_C, AC_C_V)
Destination one MQTT Topic destination, same topic as in Homey, cycle 5000 ms
Low-Voltage Behavior Pause PID polling only (Custom Voltage), 12 V

Automate → Custom PIDs (init ATSH7E4, names must match exactly)

Name PID Expression Unit
CHARGE_CYCLES 2243A51 ((B4*256)+B5) cycles
HV_CAPACITY 2241A31 ((B4*256)+B5)*0.032 kWh
MIN_CELL_V 2243291 ((B4*256)+B5)/1666.666 V
MAX_CELL_V 22432B1 ((B4*256)+B5)/1666.666 V
BATT_RESISTANCE 2240E91 [B4:B5]/2 mΩ
AMBIENT_TEMPERATURE 2200461 B4-40 °C

Power Saving: Sleep Mode Enable, 13.1 V, 5 min. This protects the 12V battery.

Troubleshooting

Open the device settings and look at Broker status:

  • Broker started, waiting for WiCAN: the dongle isn’t connecting. The car is probably asleep (the WiCAN turns off its Wi-Fi then), or the MQTT URL in the WiCAN is wrong.
  • Login rejected: username or password differs between WiCAN and Homey.
  • Last message on “…”: data is arriving. Check that the topic matches the one in Homey.

While the car sleeps, Homey keeps the last known values. Data comes in again as soon as you drive or charge.

Notes

  • Charging power is a separate capability (not measure_power), so Homey Energy doesn’t count it twice next to your charger.
  • The range is an estimate. Set your own consumption in the device settings for a better figure.
  • Tested on my own Ampera-e (2017) with a WiCAN Pro.

This app is not affiliated with Opel, Chevrolet or MeatPi Electronics.
