Hi!
I am considering reorganizing my network which would mainly mean that I assign new IP addresses to most of my network devices, at lest to almost most of the IoT.
Now, my question is: will the devices still be accessible in homey without any additional adaptions and will my flows still work? Or I other words: How are network devices identified by homey (flows)? IP address? MAC address?
Because I would very quickly drop that idea if my whole homey system would become broken…
that depends per application, maybe even per driver.
on some devices the developer can use a devices IP-address, often you can enter that in the Homey Device settings.
or it uses another ID like the MAC address to keep it working on DHCP.
or it can use the mDNS discovery…
but it also depends what you are going to do, are you moving things to a separate (IoT) VLAN / IP-Subnet? That also could make it more complex depending on your networking knowledge.
Currently, I am using a Fritzbox as router and modem, with an ubiquiti switch attached, to which 3 access points are attached. For various reasons, most related to network security, I would like to allow only VPN access from outside my network.
Mostly, it´s only one app (Devotnthink) on my phone and laptop requiring access to my NAS. I found step-by-step instructions on how to setup a vpn profile using ubiquiti hardware that allows for automatic on-demand-VPN on iPhones, which is exactly what I need.
So my plan/idea is to:
Setup the fritzbox as a modem only
Configure the switch as the router and VPN gateway
Clean up the messy IP address sections, which are that messy because I didn’t anticipate how many IoT (shelly) devices I was about ti install in the first place.
I read a few thing about VLANs, but decided that it´s way to cumbersome to set that up correctly, so currently there are no plans to implement that.
Most of the devices and the most complex flows are from shelly and eufy - any idea how those will react to the changes outlines above?
Just make (as a first step) your local network on your new router the same as on your old router, that is IP-range and IP-numbers. So all connected devices don’t see any change.
