There’s a series of tips an tricks videos made by Alex, a former employee of Athom, that are quite usefull!
At first : think about what you want to do. Select brand that cover most of you wishes so you don’t end up with dozens of apps. (Altough you probably will 
).
And if you want/need Zigbee devices; add net-powered devices first..
Oh, and if you want/need use Wifi : setup a separate network or at least a dedicated router/dhcp for it and USE DHCP reservation for all devices and keep an administration.
