I fully agree with firmware updates of devices but I don’t think there are many firmware updates freely available.
Home Assistant, for instance, is mandating it for partner ship.
And there aren’t many yet.
It should be, but it isn’t.
Have a look at zigbee2mqtt, it supports ota for a variety of zigbee devices
It’s also a much better Zigbee implementation in general, but that’s not really the point. Homey users, who already paid a lot of money for their Homey Pro, should not be forced to buy additional hardware to be able to do basic things like OTA updates.
We are indeed facing the same issues in regards to the availability of firmware from our partners.
It’s not the problem of being able to but the availability of the firmware files themselves.
Hardware vendors just don’t seem to like to have firmware files being openly available.
Maybe try to think about mandating it for a partnership.
The more Zigbee controller vendors mandating it, the more likely the chances are they’re giving in.
Or maybe signing an NDA towards the vendors on keeping the firmware files private in the Homey eco system.
Although it would be better if all the big players like Homey, Home Assistant, SmartThings and Hubitat are cooporating on this and make a stance.
Just solve it, ASAP
Hi,
Could you create a guide on how we could update this as an interim solution? That would be the first step, and maybe the community can take it further as Robert Klep suggests. I think this would be a good question for the podcast ![]()
Maybe de communitie wil find an other way to find the frimware versions ![]()
Still no news? I still cant use my IKEA innselning as there is a firmware bug in the fw that it comes with from the store. As @robertklep mentioned, I paid a lot of money for my homey so that I wouldnt need to buy multiple gateways. IKEA distributes their fw so if someone finds out how to update the device let me know asap.
Don’t count on Zigbee OTA updates being supported by Homey any time soon. This topic pops up every couple of years, and every time it’s the same story (“We’ll look into it” or “Technically it’s possible for app developers to implement OTA updates”, while Athom themselves don’t even implement it in their own apps, like the IKEA one).
I can live with not having OTA support for stuff that has their own gateway AND support Matter, like IKEA. The IKEA stuff works well for enough for me right now.
What’s really frustrating is stuff like Danfoss that Homey supposedly support but not with Matter or thru the API. In this case it actually appears that the thermostats need a firmware update to work with the Homey app and the only way to do that is to buy a Danfoss gateway or do a HA setup…
I had the same issue some years ago with Fibaro stuff, had to get a used Home Center just to update firmware to make it work with Homey!
Agree also about the dashboards, probably looks flashy on a YouTube marketing video but they are quite useless for the most part. The widget support does what it needs to do already…
Yeah. That. Because I bought a multi protocol smart home hub so that I could keep collecting more bridges. Makes total sense. Not.
Right now I am working on bringing back some “old” hubs…
1 Xiaomi hub
2 Philips Hue bridge
3 Ikea Dirigera
This to improve the speed and reliability of the system. To support OTA firmware updates and to have all functions correct available and working.
For the moment I think I work over Matter for both PH and ID. Xiaomi using the app, but limited to 1 gateway for my by the moment. Looking for a solution to use zndmwg04lm gateway in combination with Homey.
Any news about the OTA application?
Keep up the good work and YouTube Chanel!
What do you mean ?
If there’s any news about FW updates through homey.
Or if some knows if IKEA has updated there products to the latest FW when you buy it?
Unfortunately, there isn’t
I would say it depends on the batch - eg. if they have it on stock longer time, for sure they are not updating it to latest version before selling. But it’s quite easy and cheap to buy ZigBee2Mqtt compatible dongle, connect it to the PC or Synology and update it on your own if needed.
This is indeed the cheapest way to keep your Ikea and other brand up to date with the latest firmware.
It do work on a PC, I have updated some equipment using this “way”.
Furthermore I am back to several hubs instead of the Homey single hub for all, because it is a nice advertisement, but in true life it is, in my opinion, real bullshit.
So, if someone wanted to write a zigbee firmware update app, I think it would have to be a server for cluster 25, right?
From what I am seeing for the OTA cluster, we need an OTA server that would somehow have to be able to upload firmware files to homey for storage and then poke a device to initiate the OTA client end of the OTA process.
I think the first question becomes does Homey provide storage to apps that could store a binary file like a firmware update?
Then I guess the next question to answer would be can the app get the list of zigbee devices.
I have only focused on device drivers so far, so I don’t know the answer to these questions yet from a general app point of view.
For me personally, if I really wanted to do a firmware update, I would have to remove the device from homey, pair it with my hubitat, do the update, bring it back into homey and then rebuild all of my flows, set all my advanced settings again. That is a major pain the a** for each device.
There’s a brilliant script to repair your flows!
