Fibaro CO Sensor does not pair

I want to replace an ‘old’ Fibaro CO Sensor which has expired (from the year 2017). I’ve removed the device from Homey Pro 2023 and tried to install a new. It keeps on failing. See screenshot of my android device. When I pair, the first and second step succeed (both steps blink green). However, after about 45sec, a pop up shows up saying ‘unable to connect Something went wrong while communicating with the device, please try again’ (See screenshot). I reset the device by longpressing the top-button, releasing it when it starts blinking white and they quickly press it again when it turns yellow. It resets which gets confirmed by a red blink.
I’ve paired on 1m distance from my Homey Pro 2023 and even put it on top of it. Both did not help. I’ve also tried mounting the bottomlid on and off to see if that makes a difference. No succes either.

Ive tried to pair the old device back again, but it won’t either. So I wonder if it is the device or something in my Homey Pro 2023. Any idea? Thanks in advance, Norbert

You need to press the pair button every second during pairing to make sure the device doesn’t enter the “sleep mode” during pairing.

Hi Sven, thanks, I’ve tried three options:

  1. Clicking every second after the second tripple klick
  2. Clicking every second after the first tripple click, continueing clicking every second after second tripple click
  3. Clicking in between first and second tripple click

Is one of the options your intention to help? Unfortunately all of the three ended up in ‘unable to connect’. Do I something wrong?

That should be correct. Athom made major changes to Z-Wave on the newer Homey Pro models (2023 and 2026) recently, so you should contact Athom:

Thanks, well, I hope they can fix it. I’ve contact them just now. Cheers, Norbert

With Z-Wave devices, it’s usually not necessary to keep them “wake”. With Zigbee devices, however, this can be quite helpful.
I started using my first Z-Wave devices in 2018. Currently, I have a total of 84 Z-Wave devices in use, 40 of which are battery-powered.

One of the most common issues during inclusion is that the device is included too far away from the Homey, even though the Homey Pro 23/26 and mini support NWI (Network Wide Inclusion). But that’s not the case here.

The firmware, which includes various changes related to Z-Wave, is currently still in the RC stage. So if the latest officially released firmware version, v13.1.2 or v13.1.5, is installed, then we can probably rule that out as a cause.

Which firmware version do you have installed, @Norbert_Vervaet?
Have you ever restarted your Homey or performed a PTP?
That’s what I would suggest next.

check whether any unknown devices are present under Homey Developer Tools and remove them.

then place the fibaro sensor very close to homey and close/stop all apps except the fibaro app. in this state, attempt to include the sensor. the inclusion process may need to be repeated up to three times.

if the inclusion fails, check again for unknown devices before the next attempt and delete them.

Thanks Dirk, I’ve got also a lot of devices like you have. Got about 10 years of experience.
I followed your tips, moved close to the homey pro controller whilst pairing. I have versions 13.1.5. I do restart each night and performed a Pull the Plug (about 30min). Unfortunately no luck.

Hi CyberSponk, thanks, I indeed had about 10 unknown devices. I removed them all. I’ve written a flow which disables all apps and enabled the Fibaro app back. Ive tried three times to pair at a distance of about 50cm. I checked, no new unknown devices in Homey Developer Tools.

now it works? could you add the fibaro to homey?

Hi CyberSponk, unfortunately I still can’t pair to Homey Pro 2023. Niels (Athom) will investigate further. I you have any tips in the meantime, feel free to post and I will try.

Do you have another Z‑Wave device that you haven’t connected to Homey yet? If so, as mentioned above, pause/stop all apps except the Fibaro app.

Start the inclusion process. When you are asked to press the button three times for the first time, do this on the device that you do not want to include.

The second time you are asked to press the button three times, do it on the Fibaro device.

Hi CyberSponk,

I’ve succeeded adding two other ‘older’ Fibare devices which weren’t paired anymore. Both got into the list of devices in my house.

Well, your tip was the right tip, luckily I haven’t thrown away the old CO-Sensor:

Step 1: Setting the Fibaro in learning Mode and indeed click 3 times on the ‘old’ CO-sensor

Step2: click 3 times on the new CO-sensor

That worked! How did you find out? Is it a common procedure to remove those kind of devices?

Cheers,

Norbert

Hi Norbert,

the standard procedure is always the one shown by the respective app when adding or removing a device.

I can’t really say how I came up with this workaround — after using Homey for more than 9 years, you occasionally get creative when needed.

That said, those situations are rare, because Homey has been running very reliably for me over all these years, with only a few minor issues along the way.

Cheers,

Nick
