Are you using AI to integrate devices that Homey doesn’t recognise properly?
I wanted to share my experience using ChatGPT to configure devices in Homey.
I had a Tuya thermometer added as “Other”. Homey showed it as connected, with an “Everything is fine” message, but no temperature reading appeared.
With my permission and an active login session, ChatGPT accessed Homey’s web interface and checked the device information. It found that Tuya was supplying the temperature through the “va_temperature” field; that data just needed to be mapped to a reading Homey could display.
ChatGPT created a virtual sensor with a temperature capability and configured a Flow to update it whenever the Tuya device reported that value. It also configured the unit conversion: for example, 228 corresponds to 22.8 °C. The conversion and write test worked, and Homey displayed the temperature on the new device tile.
ChatGPT has also built me a personalised dashboard with the lights, sensors and other devices across my homes and shared areas. It includes floor plans with devices positioned visually, areas that light up when their lights are on, a button panel for controlling equipment, and timelines showing when sensors were triggered or lights were switched on.
We have also added runtime counters for the pool filtration pump, chlorinator and drainage pump, date-based histories, and power and energy charts for the Sotavento electricity meter. The main electricity meter remains read-only to prevent an accidental power cut.
Another feature we have added is sharing the dashboard through links, choosing which zones, maps and information each person can access. I can create password-protected access, set its duration and revoke it whenever needed. This lets me share a particular area without giving access to the rest of the installation.
The dashboard is hosted on ChatGPT Sites and can be opened in a browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Shared links provide access to the authorised areas without me having to keep my own screen open.
We have built all of this through conversation: I send a screenshot, explain what I want changed, and ChatGPT modifies the dashboard. That is how we have adjusted names, sizes, button layouts and different screens to suit the way I use my smart home.
For me, the interesting part is being able to explain a problem in everyday language and have AI help investigate the data, operate the interface and configure a solution. I didn’t have to program these solutions myself.
In the thermometer’s case, we used information the device was already sending and tools available within Homey. Automatic updates still depend on Tuya delivering new reports.
How many of you are already using AI this way? Have you built your own dashboard or recovered readings from thermometers or motion sensors that previously showed no data, by letting ChatGPT access Homey and help configure them?
