They do. Matter devices will indeed work without an app. However, for Works with Homey partners, like Schüco will soon be, we also offer the possibility to publish an app in the Homey App Store. This adds a couple of important benefits:
Devices are tested by our team, so users can be confident they work and behave as expected
Devices are easier to discover for users who may not be familiar with protocols like Matter, Zigbee, or Z-Wave
Devices can receive custom branding, such as dedicated icons that accurately represent the product
Custom pairing instructions can be added to improve the onboarding experience
So while an app is not strictly necessary from a technical perspective, it does significantly improve the overall experience for both brands and users
Ok, I understand, but my experience is different. In the beginning I used Matter Devices with apps, but that added more complexity as it removed. By erasing the app, all my devices were also deleted and much more.
For me Matter is the Standard that is known to be compatible without driver, or app in Homey’s case.
The only point I understand is publicity. Homey should offer a way for companies to add their products to the app store, but without any install. Simply showing the brand and some pictures with an instruction set like “Clic on the + button, select add device, select Matter …” That makes sense.
