⚠️ ATTENTION: Community Security regarding the use of external links

:warning: ATTENTION: Community Security regarding the use of external links

To ensure the safety of all members and maintain the integrity of our platform, the use of unnecessary external links is strictly prohibited.

Please refrain from posting:

  • Affiliate or Referral Links: Unauthorized commercial linking is not permitted.
  • External File Hosting (e.g., Dropbox, Google Drive): Use the forum’s built-in features to write posts. Don’t deep-link to files you don’t own, and provide a link to the site from the owner where the document can be found and downloaded or requested.
  • External Picture Services: Please upload images directly to your posts. This prevents “broken” images and protects users from tracking scripts on third-party hosting sites.

Why this matters:
External links can lead to malicious software, phishing attempts, or data tracking. By keeping content native to the forum, we ensure a faster, safer, and more reliable experience for everyone.

Posts containing prohibited links may be edited or removed without notice. Repeat offenders risk account suspension.

And hey, please continue using a link to a community review on YT or a external blog explaining related fun things in details!!

This has also to do with the way we prevent spam on the forum like described here: ⚠️ ATTENTION COMMUNITY: New AI-Assisted Spam Tactics

Thank you for helping keep our community safe!

AI responses may include mistakes. Learn more about the Google AI I used to create above post

If you find a reply linking here please overthink the links you posted or the way you posted pictures. Maybe you see your post was edited and we already fixed things (fe shortened some links).
Like  the reply and we can remove that post to keep the community safe, clean and interesting.

How does this work / how do you do this?

I seem to be able to only upload images, but not e.g. a text file or PDF:

Based on this Discourse FAQ: Understanding Uploads, Images, and Attachments - Site Management - Discourse Meta, upload of other file types needs to be enabled by the site admin apparently.

Good point, had to check with an other user Account to see that I as Moderator have different options
That’s why a disclaimer was added that AI can make mistakes (like :see_no_evil_monkey:, Sorry like Humans :face_with_peeking_eye: )

But honestly, I can’t think about many users needing to share files in the past ~ 8 years here, not even many cases on the forum the 2 years before with less functionality.

Imho members here should not need to download files/documents/PDFs to open in other programs.

If you didn’t create it yourself, link to the place (owner/company site) where we can request the file or download it. This also prevents Legal issues distributing copyrighted material.

For Code-repositories use your favourite service (github, gitlab, bitbucket, etc… there are many) and provide the link to it on the community.

For smaller text in context of a topic I think of the Logs they didn’t type themself but want to past and small Code blocks and code snips.

Users here should be using the “Preformatted text (Ctrl E)“

type or paste text here

and just now I realize that enabling the “rich text editor“ you also can choose between many types of text (from plaintext, markdown, java, javascript, json and many more.)

My conclusion for now:

No, there is no real need to enable other filesharing in the community

(but honestly if you really want, you have to ask Athom as they are Admin, pay the bill for Discourse and have to take the risk for sharing illegal content)

Note: Above are screenshots from editing on the community using a computer with webbrowser. On your favorite mobile it could be slight different.

Yes, I agree.

Sharing file types other than images is incidental. I got triggered, because I recently was asked bij a developer to share (the contents of) an XML file and was not able to do so. Even the pre-formatted option did not retain the structure of the contents. That was a case in which it would have been practical to just be able to attach te file.

I was not aware of the rich text editing option with the file types you mention. It’s not available on my mobile device. I’ll have to check on my laptop. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
