[APP][Pro] Sensible – Room-sensor control for the heat pumps and heaters you already have

Sensible brings the logic of a Sensibo with a room sensor to the heat pumps and heaters you already have in Homey – without extra hardware or advanced flows.

Install the test version

Why

A heat pump measures the temperature up by the ceiling, right next to itself, so the rest of the room often ends up colder or warmer than you asked for. Instead of switching the heat pump on and off, Sensible works out how far off the heat pump’s own sensor is compared to your room sensors, averaged over time, and corrects the setpoint by exactly that. The heat pump keeps regulating on its own, just towards the real room temperature, so it can run steadily at low power where it is most efficient.

What it works with

  • Heat pumps / air conditioners already in Homey with a target temperature (any brand app). Sensible is built first and foremost for heat pumps.
  • Panel heaters, floor heating and other heaters with their own thermostat – including thermostats that use a different setpoint capability, such as Zigbee thermostats through the Zigbee2MQTT app.
  • Panel heaters on a smart plug marked Heater – switched like a classic thermostat, at least 5 minutes between switches, and never left on without a working room sensor. Plugs marked Air conditioning or Heat pump are never switched, to protect the compressor. The same metering plug can be both heater and power meter.
  • Water heaters are never controlled.

Used by testers with, among others, Toshiba AC, MELCloud (Mitsubishi) and Daikin Onecta. Mode detection for cooling also recognises the mode names used by apps such as Tuya, Hitachi, Intesis, tado, Midea, Samsung and Sensibo. If yours does not work, see Support below.

How it behaves

  • Only the temperature is changed – fan speed, swing and operating mode stay yours (unless you turn on Emergency fan, see below).
  • Switched off with the remote? While Sensible is on, it switches the heat pump on again when heat is needed (Override manual changes, on by default – can be turned off). When the Sensible thermostat itself is off, heaters are switched off once and then left to you.
  • Off only as a last resort – a heater is switched off only when even its lowest setpoint would keep heating a room that is already warm enough. Status tells why and at which room temperature it starts again.
  • Cooling – if the heat pump can cool, an Allow cooling switch appears. Sensible then works like the auto mode of a heat pump and keeps the room in a small comfort band around the target.

Features

  • Room sensor control – one or more room sensors (average), optional humidity sensors.
  • Learns your heat pump – the difference between pump and room, how much extra lowering it needs to really stop, its power draw (with a power meter), and how fast the room warms up. Readings from a stopped fan or defrosting are ignored. Everything learned survives app updates.
  • Predictive brake – eases off in time when the room rises quickly towards the target.
  • Power meter (optional) – a switch or plug in front of the heat pump lets Sensible know for sure how hard it works.
  • Cannot keep up warning – if the heater works hard but the room stays below the target (low fan speed, an open door, a very cold night), Sensible warns you, with a flow trigger and condition.
  • Emergency fan (optional, off by default) – while the heater cannot keep up, Sensible raises the heat pump’s fan speed one step every 30 minutes and puts it back once the room has caught up. Auto is never touched, and if you change the fan yourself, Sensible leaves it alone.
  • Room with fireplace – turn it on once; Sensible detects by itself when the fire is lit, lets the heat pump rest, does not cool the free heat away and does not learn from that period. Optionally choose a sensor near the fireplace – then that sensor decides, and its temperature is shown on the device. Flow cards The fire is lit/out override the detection.
  • Away – manual or automatic when nobody is home, using Homey’s own presence, presence devices such as Smart Presence, or both. You choose who counts.
  • Night program – separate times for weekdays and weekends.
  • Vacation mode – a return date; Sensible heats the house up again before you come home.
  • Frost protection – keeps the room warm enough even when the thermostat is off.
  • Comfort mode – takes humidity into account (feels-like temperature).
  • Soft adjustment – lets the heat pump ramp up gently instead of jumping to a high setpoint.
  • Window pause – pauses heating when a window or door sensor opens, or on a sudden temperature drop.
  • Timers – a temperature for a while, or turn off later.
  • Flows – away, temperature for a while, turn off after, allow cooling, soft adjustment, window pause, emergency fan, fire lit/out, cannot keep up and more.

Configuration page

Homey app → More → Apps → Sensible → Configure:

  • Overview of all rooms with the status of each heater, and a knowledge bar that shows how well Sensible knows each room. Copy diagnostics puts everything in one text.
  • Night program, vacation mode and the presence choice.
  • Shared defaults (away temperature, frost temperature, override manual changes) for all thermostats at once.
  • Language – Automatic (as Homey), English or Norsk.
  • Voluntary data sharing (see below).

Getting started

  1. Add a device → Sensible heating.
  2. Tick the heater(s) and room sensor(s). Optionally humidity sensors, a power meter for the heat pump, a sensor near the fireplace and window/door sensors.
  3. Use the new device like any thermostat.

Use Repair on the device to change or add heaters and sensors later (your current choices are kept), and the device settings to fine-tune the regulation.

Voluntary data sharing (off by default)

On the configuration page you can choose to help improve Sensible:

  • Share anonymous data – a daily summary and short excerpts around heating up, braking and stopping, without id, names or times.
  • Extended participation (pseudonymous) – measurements every 5 minutes under a random id, so I can follow how Sensible works in your home and help without screenshots. Data older than 90 days is deleted continuously, and you can delete everything yourself.

You can see exactly what is sent before switching anything on. Nothing is shared with or sold to anyone. Privacy statement: Sensible – personvern

Support

Please post in this thread. It helps a lot if you include:

  • A screenshot of the device setting Status (Device → Settings → Status), or Copy diagnostics from the configuration page.
  • Which heat pump/heater app you use.
  • If you have Extended participation on: your participant id (shown on the configuration page).

Changelog

The ten latest versions are listed here. Older versions are in the section below.

1.17.4
The thermostat device uses the same heat pump icon as the app.

1.17.3
New app image and icons showing a heat pump.

1.17.2
New app image.

1.17.1
More robust learning: the heat pump’s own temperature is no longer used for learning while it is switched off, right after it starts, or during sudden jumps such as defrosting. Such readings could make Sensible think the heat pump measures several degrees too low, park it at its minimum and switch it off.

1.17.0
Fireplace mode is now “Room with fireplace”: turn it on once, and Sensible detects by itself when the fire is lit – from the room warming up while the heat pump is not doing it, or at once with an optional sensor near the fireplace. Meanwhile the heat pump rests, no cooling and no learning; it can now be combined with Allow cooling. New flow cards: the fire is lit/out, a fire is detected. Calmer heat pumps: the learned difference between heat pump and room now follows slowly while the room is steady at the target, so the setpoint is no longer parked below what the heat pump measures (which made some stop and start).

1.16.1
Support mode is now “Extended participation (pseudonymous)”: it runs until you switch it off instead of 14 days, and data older than 90 days is deleted continuously. The texts explain what pseudonymous means.

1.16.0
New on the configuration page: help improve Sensible with voluntary data sharing, off by default. Share anonymous data (a daily summary and short excerpts without time or id) so each heat pump model gets better starting values, or switch on support mode for 14 days when you want help, so the developer can see what happens without screenshots. You can see exactly what is sent and delete your support data at any time.

1.15.3
Status and the configuration page now tell why a heater is switched off (its lowest setpoint would still keep it heating, or “off when target reached” is on) and at which room temperature it starts again.

1.15.2
New: a knowledge bar on the configuration page shows how well Sensible knows each room and heater – from how accurately it predicts the room, how stable the learned values are and which situations it has seen. The more data it has (the heater’s own temperature, a heating state, a power meter, several room sensors), the higher it can reach; the bar shows that limit. Also includes 1.15.1: long-term learning of each heat pump’s power draw, stop margin learned only while it really works hard, and a predictive brake. Everything learned is kept through app updates.

1.15.1
Learns the power draw of each heat pump over time (calm and high level) instead of assuming from the first readings, and only learns the stop margin while the heat pump really works hard – an inverter holding at minimum power no longer counts. New predictive brake: when the room rises quickly towards the target, Sensible eases off in time, further ahead when the heat pump works hard. Learned stop margins are reset once.

Older versions (1.0.0 – 1.15.0)

1.15.0
Calmer heat pumps: the difference to the room is no longer inflated by the heat pump’s own warm air – Sensible uses the difference measured while it ran calmly (with a power meter) or the lowest one of the last hours once the room has reached the target. When the room is too warm, the extra lowering now builds up gradually (about 0.5 °C per 10 minutes) and, with a power meter, stops as soon as the heat pump runs calmly instead of pushing it all the way off.

1.14.1
Fixed: the heat pump could keep working its way up after the room had reached the target, because its own warm air raised the measured difference to the room. The difference now only shrinks while the room is at or above the target, and – with a power meter – while the heat pump runs hard.

1.14.0
Sensible now regulates on a sliding average of the room temperature (about 10 minutes), so sensors that report in coarse steps no longer make the heat pump hop. Window detection still reacts to the raw value. Status and the overview show the average.

1.13.6
Smoother heat pump operation: the extra lowering is only used while the room is clearly too warm, so the heat pump eases into holding the target instead of being parked low and then working hard again. Heater setpoint now shows what the heater is actually set to (soft adjustment may hold it back).

1.13.5
Updated app description with all recent features.

1.13.4
For safety, only smart plugs marked Heater (Varmeelement) can be used as on/off heat sources. Plugs marked Air conditioning or Heat pump are never switched, because cutting a running compressor’s power can damage it.

1.13.3
The same metering plug can now be both heater and power meter, for example for a simple panel heater with a mechanical thermostat.

1.13.2
Smart plugs marked Heat pump can now be used as on/off heat sources too, switched at most every 15 minutes to spare the compressor.

1.13.1
Clearer help text: on/off plugs are those marked Heater (Varmeelement) or Air conditioning; plugs marked Heat pump are never listed.

1.13.0
New: smart plugs can be used as on/off heat sources for panel heaters. Choose Heater or Air conditioning as what is plugged in on the plug, and it appears in Sensible’s heater list. Sensible switches it like a classic thermostat against your room sensors, with at least 5 minutes between switches, and never leaves it on without a working room sensor. A device cannot be both heater and power meter.

1.12.1
Less oscillation on heat pumps: the difference between the heat pump’s own sensor and the room is now averaged over about 40 minutes (slower than the room reacts), so the pump’s own warm air can no longer push the setpoint up. The learned stop margin is capped at 4 °C and no longer grows while the measured power is falling (inverter pumps going down to minimum power). Learned margins were reset once.

1.12.0
Automatic away can now use presence from Homey itself, from presence devices such as Smart Presence, or both. Choose the source and who counts on the configuration page.

1.11.0
New: choose power meters for the heater (for example a switch or smart plug in front of the heat pump) when adding a thermostat or with Repair. Sensible then knows for sure when the heat pump is running, uses it for the learned stop margin and shows the power on the device and in the overview. Homey’s approximated usage is never taken for a real measurement.

1.10.2
The overview shows whether cooling is allowed or switched off instead of only whether the heat pump can cool.

1.10.1
The overview on the configuration page now shows each thermostat’s status in a readable way: tap a room to see what affects it right now (night, vacation, fireplace mode, sensors) and, for each heater, what it measures, what Sensible set it to and whether it can cool or reports heating.

1.10.0
The configuration page has a new design and three new sections: an overview of all Sensible thermostats (with Copy diagnostics), which people count for automatic away, and shared defaults (away temperature, frost temperature, override manual changes) that can be applied to all thermostats at once.

1.9.0
New configuration page for the app (Homey app → More → Apps → Sensible → Configure): night program with separate weekday and weekend times (the nights Friday→Saturday and Saturday→Sunday count as weekend), and vacation mode with a return date that heats the house up again before you come home. Night temperature is still set per thermostat; existing night times were moved to the new page.

1.8.2
Cooling now works like the auto mode of a heat pump: when cooling is done, the heat pump stays in cool mode and rests instead of switching to heat (and possibly off). It switches to heat only when the room actually needs heat. If it gets warm again first, cooling simply resumes.

1.8.1
Fixed: settings with decimals (for example 0.3) were rejected as invalid values.

1.8.0
New: Fireplace mode, for when a fireplace or another heat source warms the room. Sensible then never cools, lets the heat pump rest while the room is warm enough and takes over when it gets colder. Fireplace mode and Allow cooling exclude each other. Also available in flows.

1.7.2
The learned stop margin now only grows when the heater itself reports that it is still heating (heating state or real power draw), so a fireplace, the sun or people no longer make it lower the heat pump too much. Heaters that do not report this use a fixed 2 °C. Learned values slowly return to 2 °C and were reset once.

1.7.1
New setting Override manual changes (on by default): a heater switched off with its own remote or app is switched on again when heat is needed. When the Sensible thermostat is off, heaters are switched off once and then left to you. The learned stop margin now only grows when the heat pump evidently keeps heating.

1.7.0
More stable heat pump control: the heater-vs-room difference is smoothed, small setpoint changes are confirmed for 10 minutes before they are sent, and the extra lowering needed to really stop a heat pump is now learned automatically per heat pump (the manual setting is gone).

1.6.5
Fixed: some heat pumps (e.g. Toshiba) kept heating after the room was above the target, because of their own built-in margin. When the room is too warm the heat pump now gets at least 2 °C below what it measures itself (adjustable). At the target it still holds the temperature at low power.

1.6.4
Allow cooling now works with many more heat pump apps (different mode names and values, e.g. Tuya, Hitachi, Intesis, tado, Midea, Samsung, Sensibo). The Status field shows which app each heater comes from and whether cooling is possible.

1.6.3
Window pause is now off by default. It is switched off once on existing devices too; turn it on again with the Window pause switch if you want it.

1.6.2
The mode picker (Automatic/Heat/Cool/Off) is gone. It was only a status but looked like a setting. A plain Status text now shows Heating, Holding temperature, Cooling, Paused (window open) or Off.

1.6.1
The mode shown on the device is now called Currently (set by Sensible) and never shows Automatic: Heat when Sensible regulates heating, Cool only while cooling (requires Allow cooling), Off when switched off.

1.6.0
New: Soft adjustment. Lets the heat pump ramp up in small steps (default 0.5 °C every 10 minutes) instead of jumping to a high setpoint. Can be switched on and off on the device and from flows, and set to apply to heating, cooling or both.

1.5.2
With Allow cooling on, the target is now a comfort band: cooling stops 0.3 °C above the target and heating aims 0.3 °C below it, so the heat pump does not jump between cooling and heating. Both are adjustable. Without cooling, heating aims at the target as before.

1.5.1
Clearer help text for Stop cooling at.

1.5.0
Cooling can now stop above the target (for example +0.3 °C), so the heat pump does not cool down only to start heating again. New wait time between cooling and heating (default 15 minutes).

1.4.7
Sensible devices are now registered as thermostats, so the Homey app colours the tile orange when heating and blue when cooling. Existing devices are converted automatically.

1.4.6
The device tile now shows whether Sensible is heating (orange), cooling (blue), idle or off, using the standard thermostat mode.

1.4.5
Fixed: after a long cold period the heat pump could keep heating a room that was already too warm. New settings for when cooling starts and stops, and for the minimum time between changes.

1.4.4
Turning the Sensible thermostat on (or changing its temperature) now takes control: heaters that are switched off are switched on again.

1.4.3
Fixed: Toshiba heat pumps stopped responding when Sensible sent temperatures below 17 °C. New setting for the lowest temperature a heater accepts. Fixed Repair and added a Status field.

1.4.2
Fixed Repair (error unknown_error_getting_file). New Status field in the device settings shows what Sensible did last for each heater, including error messages.

1.4.1
Description mentions averaging of several sensors.

1.4.0
Choose several room temperature and humidity sensors, the average is used. Allow cooling now also works for heat pumps such as Toshiba that have separate fan, swing and power modes.

1.3.1
Comfort mode now uses indoor comfort levels: about 0.3 °C per 10 % humidity, max 1 °C.

1.3.0
Automatic away using Homey presence, night temperature, frost protection, comfort mode with feels-like temperature and an optional separate humidity sensor.

1.2.0
Window pause now also detects open windows from a sudden temperature drop, works together with window/door sensors and can be switched on and off. Repair keeps your current selection, so sensors can easily be added to existing devices.

1.1.1
Updated app description: built first and foremost for heat pumps.

1.1.0
Away mode, timers (hold a temperature for a while or switch off later) and pause on open window.

1.0.3
Easier to read app description.

1.0.2
New device images.

1.0.1
New app images.

1.0.0
First release.

Hi was waiting for a topic here. I have some namron thermostats through zigbee2mqtt that did not show up. Only my zwave heatit ones that are connected directly to homey worked. Anything you can do

Updates 16 October 2026 (1.17.5 – 1.17.8)

1.17.5 – Room with fireplace: the device now shows the temperature by the fireplace when a sensor there is chosen, and status and the configuration page show what detected the fire (fireplace sensor, room warming up or a flow). A fire no longer lowers the knowledge score.

1.17.6 – Thermostats from apps that use a different setpoint capability now show up and work – for example Namron and other Zigbee thermostats through the Zigbee2MQTT app. Sensible now finds the setpoint (target_temperature.local), the thermostat’s own reading (measure_temperature.local) and the heating state (running_state) by itself. Frost protection setpoints and chip temperatures are never used.

1.17.7 / 1.17.8 – Window pause and its status are now at the bottom of their tabs on the device, so the temperature by the fireplace comes higher up. (A try with smaller icons was reverted – they are full size again.)

Thanks for reporting! The Zigbee2MQTT app exposes the Namron setpoint as target_temperature.local, which Sensible did not look for. Version 1.17.6 (test) supports it – please update, add a new Sensible device and your Namron thermostats should now be listed. Let me know how it works!

Updates 17 October 2026 (1.17.9 – 1.17.10)

1.17.9 – Room with fireplace: with a sensor near the fireplace, the fire only counts as lit while the fireplace is getting warmer – a fireplace that is still warm hours after the fire no longer keeps “fire detected” on. A detected fire also ends at once when the room drops below the target. Heat pumps that read far colder than the room while idle (fan stopped) no longer make Sensible park them at their minimum and switch them off.

1.17.10 – The app page now links to this thread under Support.

Updates 18 October 2026 (1.18.0 – 1.18.1)

1.18.0 – New: Sensible warns when the heater cannot keep up – it works hard but the room stays below the target (for example low fan speed, an open door or a very cold night). New flow trigger The heater cannot keep up and condition The heater can/cannot keep up.

New opt-in Emergency fan (shown when the heat pump has a fan speed Sensible can set, off by default): while the heater cannot keep up, Sensible raises the fan speed one step every 30 minutes, and puts it back once the room has caught up. Auto is never touched, and if you change the fan yourself, Sensible leaves it alone. The warning suggests turning it on.

1.18.1 – The feature is now called Emergency fan.

Updates 20 October 2026 (1.18.2 – 1.19.1)

1.18.2 – Fixed: the warning that the heater cannot keep up – and with it the Emergency fan – did not start for heat pumps on low fan speed, because they never reach their high power level. It now also starts when Sensible asks for clearly more than the heat pump measures.

Room with fireplace: with a fireplace sensor, only that sensor decides whether the fire is lit (sun warming the room no longer counts). Without a sensor, heat still coming out of the heat pump right after it stopped no longer counts as a fire.

1.19.0 – New: choose the language for Sensible on the configuration page – Automatic (as Homey), English or Norsk. It applies to the configuration page, adding and repairing devices, and Sensible’s own texts such as status and warnings. Names of switches, flow cards and device settings follow your Homey’s language. The App Store page is now in English.

1.19.1 – The device type is now called Sensible heating in all languages.

Updates 22 October 2026 (1.19.2)

1.19.2 – New app icon – a thermometer S – and a device image on a white background. Shorter App Store description; the full description now lives in the first post of this topic.
