Thats correct but existing implementations are still running, what would be the best followup project as protocol?
Maybe an interface convertor to implement on homey to create backward compatibinity?

I’m afraid my system was/is based around the xAP protocol . I then evolved into MQTT and use NodeRED to bridge my xAP devices to MQTT. Works very well.
