# Tuya Zigbee communication issues

I am trying to help a friend automate his house. I personally have roughly the same number of Zigbee devices and everything works very well in my setup, but at my friend’s place it seems to be one problem after another.

Various devices often lose their connection to the Zigbee network and therefore need to be paired again. Other devices, for example RGB lamps, are installed as three units in three garden posts. I have personally modified the driver so that I can see the number of retransmission attempts on these devices. Even though the system can now retry up to 25 times, it still happens far too often that the lamps do not respond. As a result, they sometimes do not turn on at all, or they turn on but the response is never received.

I am disappointed that his system does not work as reliably as mine. I have chosen to purchase many different Tuya devices and made sure that I also have the same models myself. I have even swapped devices between my house and his; the problems remain at his house, while his devices work perfectly fine at my place.

I have now noticed some new features in the Homey Developer Toolkit. Could someone analyze this and provide suggestions as to what might be causing the problems we are experiencing?

The following lamps are installed in groups of three in three posts, grouped as follows:

- S11, S12, and S13
- S21, S22, and S23
- S31, S32, and S33.

As can be seen, some of them have turned on while others have not.

This one floods, even drowns, the mesh with messages (rx: 513076) making it slow and unreliable. Compare this figure to other, much lower, Rx values in the list.

Most radar sensors (a.k.a. mmWave) use wifi as communication protocol because of the constant flow of event updates.  
Zigbee was never designed for that.

This one isn’t helping either, 126863 messages:

I’d temporary remove these two to see if mesh performance improves.  
Also mind possible interference by 2.4GHz wifi signals

Having rebuilt all ive mine from start. I have i think a solid network. Took my time to set a pairing order.  
Managed to add 1 of my many thread devices - none work apart from this one - thread seems a mystery in shs  
And the red banner warning that many have reported has gone seemingly unresolved - thats another issue.

As soon as it added, my zigbee sockets started lagging and i got messages back in the vm log.  
I immediately took it off and rolled back to an earlier snapshot to see if it hells.  
What ive found is zigbee seems to always re-route. Ive left devices now a few days and yet in the log i can see the route of devices change. It takes time for zigbee to settle and the time to let this happen is important before adding further “end devices”  
It would be good to see in the developer page that routing as we can see with zwave.

Ive given up on both thread for now and the support team.

You do have ALOT of devices. Like Peter said, look for other sources of interference. Change wifi channel, split your zigbee channels as best as possible. Keep your bridge and other devices separated if you can. I know its difficult with so many hubs etc but we can but try

Thank you for the suggestion. I now know what I should look into. As mentioned, there are other devices showing values between 50,000 and 100,000 on RX. I will investigate what can be done. I assume it may be possible to modify the drivers to make them less aggressive.

An interesting observation: the Kaffebryggare **a4:c1:38:7c:2b:72:85:fb 46795 (B6CB)** uses Homey’s built-in Zigbee driver.

You can also buy a Tuya ZigBee or MultiMode gateway and add them using the official Tuya app for Homey:

I have compared the radar device showing high traffic with the radar devices I have myself, and I see that in my setup the values range between 5,000 and 8,000. I suspect that the radar device listed above with high traffic has effectively become a router/repeater linking the other devices. The same likely applies to the device labeled “Kaffebryggare”

Geographically, these devices are positioned such that I can imagine Zigbee has selected these two to relay signals to, among others, the RGB lamps in the garden posts, which are experiencing the mentioned problems with turning on and off.
