A bit weird to see [this come through my Youtube shorts](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/1i1ciCjUQFg)
title from Bright, “Tuya = troep” → “Tuya = junk”

In the Short’;
Stefan (co founder of Athom, and responsible for the marketing i believe)
Explains that there is only one smarthome company that has a **horrible system** and doesn’t want to work with them and that is Tuya, every brand that uses it regrets it. And Tuya is the company behind “ **cheap junk** ”…

Sorry but when you buy €400,- worth of Tuya stuff it works wonderful with the Smart Life app and you could build an entire Smarthome on the Tuya platform with support for room layouts, scenes, apple carplay and Google Assistent to name a few (and also support for Homeassistant intergration)

Now buy an Homey for the same €400,- and you have… **nothing** …
Sure we don’t know how long Tuya will support a product, where our data ends up (privacy wise) etc. etc. but then again, what are the promises worth made by Athom(/ **LG** )??

Sorry had to get this of my chest, i find it weird that when it doesn’t goes Athom’s way they start to talk negative about a brand they embraces a few months ago and where so thrilled about to work with together…

It does fit Athom’s propensity to blame everyone but themselves 🤷🏼‍♂️

“Build an entire Smarthome on the Tuya platform”

Sure it works wonderful, but as soon as your internet goes down, everything stops working.

@deejayreissue and @JohanP,

I totally agree with both but that’s not the point.

Yes, you should never have your smarthome rely on the cloud and when you use Tuya you probably are paying with your data.

This has nothing to do with my opinion about Tuya, its about Athom being two faced about it.

If you think Athom are two faced, then what does it make Tuya for tearing up a deal half way through in the manner that they did?

Do you seriously think this is the first time theyve used this tactic to get people to pay to use the API?

It seems completely deliberate to me

What @robertklep said but also i’m not here protecting Tuya, i personally wouldn’t use Tuya in my Smarthome since i think it’s bad practice to have “smart devices” like lights to work on WIFI (instead of i.e. Zigbee or Z-Wave).

Tuya does bring Smarthome to the big public with Calex and LSC Action for example, just like IKEA does with their Tradfri line… All a lot cheaper then Philips HUE…

I personally couldn’t give a rats ass if Tuya goes bankrupt or gets ignored by all Smarthome platforms… I made this topic because Athom is being two-faced and Tuya + Homey users should know this.

I’m also not anti- Athom, i still love my Homey and the Smarthome experience Athom gave me the last 7 years ❤…

It’s just weird to have one of the founders say such things in a dutch podcast while just some time ago Athom was thrilled to work with Tuya.

If @Doekse posts that they are never ever going to work with Tuya again (with their explanation) … case closed… right??

True, but that doesn’t change the end result, right?
While we are waiting for some update or news, someone from Tuya mentions it is already in the past

That has some nuance to it. After pairing the devices, most can be controlled directly via bluetooth. Very suboptimal sure, but good enough for most scenarios where internet fails.

It’s not entirely that black&white, Lee.

- Regarding Homey: yes that’s correct \>
it is a cloud connection it depends on
- Regarding the Tuya Smart phone app: not true \>
it all keeps working for several hours w/o internet. Not sure about the max number of hours/days, at some point during the test I needed internet again, for other stuff 😬

I have the luxury my internet seldom goes down, except for the occasional short outages at night.
Still, cloud dependency is not recommended.

</div>

We are all depending on cloud more and more. I think in a lot of cases without knowing it.

Take a simple thing as E-mail. You used to have a thick client that would connect to the internet to send E-mails and receive them in the process. You could schedule a send receive every now and then. In office environments you would have an Exchange server with instant E-mail delivery; what a joy!
Fast forward to current date: everyone is connected to an E-mail client that basically just crashes as soon as the internet goes down.

More and more people are not using PCs as their computer, but depend on phones and tablets. The apps on these devices are more and more PWAs where there is a strong dependency of the internet.

And this all is not an issue at all as long as the internet doesn’t go down (which it seldom does) and you’re not a tin foil hat person.

Circling back to the topic: the “Tuya is troep” statement was not based on it being cloud dependent or not. It was an individual statement of one of the founders of Athom in one medium while the partnership manager is providing a completely different message here on the forum.

I don’t think much, if any, consideration is given within Athom to consistent communication, or even communication in general. As a CEO of a student-run startup it might have been fine to slag off Tuya in a public vodcast, but Athom is now a subsidiary of LG and being courteous in business is still a big thing in Asia. Also, Stefan seems to misunderstand that Homey needs Tuya more than Tuya needs Homey.

Agreed, Tuya doesn’t need Homey at all. However, I think Homey doesn’t need Tuya at all as well. There is a community app to talk to some of the Tuya devices. And as long as we accept that that is as far as it goes, the current level of communication between the parties is ok.
