# Sensor to detect sound

I am looking for some sensor to detect sound.
When the baby starts crying while I’m asleep at night, I want to turn the lights on in my bedroom.
Any suggestions?

I wouldn’t recommend netatmo for the reason of detecting a baby crying, even though it does have a sound measuring, the value only gets updated every 5 minutes, so if the baby starts crying 30 seconds after the last update, you won’t know it for 4,5 minutes long.

Is it the case even for the 2nd generation? But you are right, for baby crying not a good idea 🙂

FWIW, Amazon devices have a service that detects a baby crying. I have several and just checked my very old echo and not quite as old dot (the pill box shape) both support that feature.
You can also ‘drop in’ on those devices to hear what’s happening.
Not tried it but if you have one spare or can get hold of one cheap (Amazon was selling the old-style dots for around £20 recently) that could be a (relatively) inexpensive and flexible option.
Amazon devices can trigger Homey flows via Amazon’s Homey skill.

Hey Andy, quick question- are you sure it was the skill in Alexa that allowed flows to be triggered and not an Alexa app in Homey?
the Homey skill brought in all of my devices from Homey into Alexa, but I’m not seeing any action in routines to start a flow.
Any guidance here would be helpful. Thanks!

I think you’re right, it was the app. I don’t use Homey Alexa apps because they became unreliable for me (may be better now). Instead, I use the VoiceMonkey skill and service to run flows from routines and vice versa.

Thanks for responding- I saw your post about voice monkey. Does it work the other way? controlling flows with an alexa trigger? I just need baby crying to send me a homey notification. I might just create a virtual button in Homey that I sync to Alexa and use that as the action in Alexa and make it the when in Homey. But if there’s a more efficient way, I’d wanna do that.
I’ve used Voice Monkey before, but it was a long time ago.

Yes it does. [This page](https://voicemonkey.io/guides/http-requests) describes how to make a web request from an Alexa routine using VoiceMonkey. That’s a useful facility in its own right. To run a Homey Flow, just use a [web hook](https://support.homey.app/hc/en-us/articles/18292876827548-Using-Webhooks-with-Homey).
