Is there a way of changing the background of the homey program in a solid color (black, dark blue or green, etc.). This makes the small letters in flows more clear.

No, this is not possible without hacking in the browser.  
But expect it to change completely when you choose to upgrade to Homey 2.0 firmware as you use your mobile from then.
