> The bridge can connect with max. 15 children _ **directly** _ ; when these are zigbee routers, you can _ **expand** _ the mesh with additional routers, and start adding your end-devices, until the performance drops or random errors occur. Then you’ve reached the limit.

30-40 devices, with 15 needing to be mains powered routers, is still pretty bad if you want to invest in a new powerful home automation system, in my opinion. If you have, or want, some significant number of Zigbee devices, going for SHS with a bridge seems like a risky purchase. But if they follow HP 2026 and SHS with a new updated bridge as well (and that bridge doesn’t have the aforementioned internet problem), I will seriously consider it for my new house. If that doesn’t happen, I hope they make some better way to migrate from HP to SHS using the HP in satellite mode for instance.

But I think there headed towards a better experience now that they get a lot more feedback on the link as I sure lots of SHS users will have HP. Did you try setting up the Matter Bridge on the Pro to connect your devices to SHS?

Totally agree. My plan was to finish my migration from SmartThings to Homey. 90% of my devices are moved over but my HP23. Is low of memory.
Ive got too many zigbee devices for this to be practical at this stage. They really need to make better use of the HP in this set up

I don’t mean to hijack the thread, but since you give the impression of being on top of the details here, and it’s not clear from the knowledge base article you linked to, I figured I should ask you. Say you start by adding a couple of mains powered Zigbee routers. Then you add a a bunch of battery powered end devices, like smoke detectors. Is there a way to ensure that the end devices connect through the routers, and not directly to the Homey Bridge, to avoid each taking up one of the precious 15 slots? This isn’t clear from the article, and if I understand it correctly, there’s no way to move a directly connected device to connect through a router other than resetting the entire network and adding everything again. So if there is also no simple way to force a device to connect through a router while there are slots available, building a Zigbee network over time with a HB seems to entail a lot of resetting and reinclusion of everything. Can that really be the case?

Yes. And especially with Homey-SHS, you should probably consider not using Homey’s Zigbee at all, and use something like Zigbee2MQTT instead. For the price of an HB you can get a very good Zigbee radio to use with Z2M and have money to spare.

Just an update: I tried the suggestion of Matter Bridge from SHS and HP, but it doesn’t work the best. It’s great for simple on/off tasks, but not for advanced items. Homelink enhancement and a single home with multiple hubs will solve this issue in the future. For now, I paid the extra and got the Homey Bridge, which solved all my issues. I’m sure I’ll still need my HP, but for now, it’s working that way.

Thank you for suggesting it, but I don’t really think so. First of all I would still be missing all of the other protocols, most importantly Z-Wave, BLE and Thread (I know HB doesn’t support Thread either). Second, one of the main reasons I gravitated towards Homey in the first place, coming from OpenHab most recently, is that it has everything integrated, no need for dongles for this and external drivers for that, and with an app store that makes sense. I no longer have the time or patience to start debugging a long chain of unrelated software and hardware when something goes wrong. Is it the Zigbee radio hardware? Its support in ZigbeeMQTT? Buggy Zigbee device support in Zigbee2MQTT? The MQTT communication? The MQTT broker app in Homey?

It’s a shame that the Bridge is so outdated. I hope they will release a new one, or some other limited device that only works as an SHS satellite for protocol support. Or better integration with HP. Because SHS seems like half a product right now, which is a shame because it could be great. 🙂

Fair enough, but there’s a reason why many old-school Homey users have migrated away from Homey’s Zigbee in favor of something better (_even_ if they have a recent-model Homey Pro with a better Zigbee chip onboard).

Not really. We can’t “control” the routes, other than by distance, but that’s no guarantee: when there’s 3 router devices in a straight line, covering 15 meters, you’d pair the end-device near the farthest router device. Used routes are dynamic though.
Of course the signal range is a “hard” limit.

> [@kvolden](#):

> Is there a way to ensure that the end devices connect through the routers, and not directly to the Homey Bridge, to avoid each taking up one of the precious 15 slots? T

According to Athom it’s not a good idea to use the first 15 slots for end-devices, because this causes a state where’s no room left for additional zigbee devices.
This means, _ **in case you really really don’t ever want to reset the zigbee network:** _
When you have, say, 5 mains powered zigbee (router) devices and 20 en-devices, you’ll have to buy 10 additional mains powered zigbee devices and pair them, in order to add the end-devices.

This is why they strongly advice to first pair router devices. Only then you can expand the network with either routers and end-devices without having to reset the zigbee network.

_When you miss certain info in (a) kb article(s), I’d suggest to notify Athom support in order to have them improve it._

I am concluding the same. Zigbee is “just ok”, but I figured Matter would resolve all. IKEA has awesome prices and products, but Matter-over-Thread doesn’t work as I expected. I really wanted to use only Homey hardware. I was thinking of using OTBR in Docker with a sonoff antenna, but that isnt an Athom supported solution. On the one hand; wait for a new Bridge?

On the other; Shelly has been working flawless, stable and fast. So I’m feeling Wifi will be my “go to”. WiFi at our home is optimal.

With that in mind I figured that Shelly, with matter-over-WiFi, would be “the way to go”, even though Matter-over-Thread is vastly superior (in general) compared to Matter-over-WiFi.

But for the life of me, I cannot get Matter-over-WiFi (with Shelly) to work.

Edit: just found this

Root cause: In lib/helper/LocalIp.ts:11-14: ip = await homey.cloud.getLocalAddress(); // Homey adds a port, so remove that // Old implement was always removing the last three characters, so keep using that for now ip = ip.slice(0, -3); The code assumes getLocalAddress() returns an IP with a 2-digit port (like :80), so it removes the last 3 characters. That is very intersting. Doing a hardware upgrade of the Homey Pro (2023) is with the current hardware prices more expansive than adding Homey Self Hosted (considering I already have a NAS able to run HSH).

One question with which chatgpt and gemini could not help: any experience on latency/delays by Homey Link? How fast is the synchronisation? Is it immediately, a few seconds or much longer?

I don’t see any noticable delays, so I didn’t bother to measure any possible differences.
Note:
not every single device / capability is supported by HL. Unfortunately there’s no overview of those.

I know about remotes, which do not have capabilities, are not supported. I.e. [Trust Smart Home (a.k.a. KaKu)](https://homey.app/en-nl/app/nl.klikaanklikuit/Trust-Smart-Home/)

Thanx. Yes, I noticed that. And also that not all capabilities are supported. Guess I just have to try within the free trial month 🙂
