# Saint du jour

_Know whose name day it is, without opening a calendar._

> Know whose name day it is, without opening a calendar.

In France, name days are a thing. Your aunt Thérèse expects a call on hers, and you find out it was yesterday when your mother mentions it at lunch. The calendar on the kitchen wall used to handle this; nobody has one any more. Saint du jour puts it back, in Homey, where a Flow can remind you the evening before.

### Let me be honest about who this is for

The calendar is the French Catholic one, and the saints and first names are French. The content stays in French whatever the language of your Homey: the app translates its own interface into nine languages, it does not translate saints. If you live outside France and have no French relatives to keep happy, this app will probably not do much for you, and I would rather say so here than in a one-star review.

### Where the data comes from

From **Nominis** , the service of the Catholic Church in France, which publishes the saint of each day and the first names attached to it, pet forms included. No account, no key. The calendar belongs to Nominis, which allows it to be reused provided its site is linked: [https://nominis.cef.fr](https://nominis.cef.fr)

The app reads the calendar once around midnight, your Homey’s midnight, for today and for tomorrow. A day’s calendar never changes, so it is kept for twelve hours rather than asked for again every time a tile opens. If the service does not answer, the app tries again after one minute, five, fifteen, thirty, and then once an hour until it does. It never gives up, so a Homey that boots before the internet box ends up showing its saint without anyone restarting anything.

### Requirements

- **Homey Pro** running firmware **12.2.0 or newer**. Local only, not available on Homey Cloud.
- An internet connection, to reach Nominis.

### The device

One **Saints calendar** device.

| Capability | What it tells you |
| --- | --- |
| **Saint of the day** | Today’s saint |
| **Name days today** | The first names celebrated today |
| **Number of name days** | How many of them |
| **A watched name is celebrated** | On when one of your names is in today’s list |
| **Saint of tomorrow** | So the evening before is not a surprise |
| **Reading taken** | When the calendar was last read |

### Widget

 ![widgets](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex025/uploads/athom/original/3X/6/7/67347aa39b5e5490b1a7ca27c1827451fbf078a5.jpeg)

- **Saint of the day** , the date, the saint in large type, the first names celebrated today, then those of your watched names that are, and tomorrow’s saint at the foot.

It refreshes on its own, so a tile left open past midnight moves to the new day, and the date follows your Homey’s language. Backgrounds: Deep blue, Slate, Plum, Forest or Sand.

### Flow cards

Triggers:

- The saint of the day has changed
- A watched name is celebrated
- A watched name is celebrated tomorrow

Each one carries the saint, the first name and the date as tokens, so the notification can say who to call.

Conditions:

- Today is the feast of [name]
- [first name] is celebrated today
- Everyone is celebrated today

Action:

- Refresh the calendar

### Settings

| Setting | Default |
| --- | --- |
| **Names to watch** | Empty. First names separated by commas |
| **Eve announcement hour** | 18 (6 pm) |

Accents and capitals do not matter, and a pet form counts as much as the name it comes from. Names are compared whole: “Anne” does not match “Jeanne”, and “Marc” does not match “Marcellin”. That last one used to be a bug, fixed in 1.0.3.

### Three days that are not like the others

- **29 February** has no principal saint. The app says so instead of showing an empty tile.
- **All Saints’ Day** celebrates every name at once. The widget says exactly that rather than listing the whole calendar, and the “Everyone is celebrated today” condition exists for that one day a year.
- **Restarts** are not midnight. The day’s cards fire when the day actually turns, not when the app restarts, so an update in the afternoon does not wish your aunt a happy name day twice.

### What it does not do

- No other countries’ name-day calendars. Not the Swedish one, not the Czech one, not the German one. Only Nominis.
- No history and no look-ahead beyond tomorrow.

### Languages

English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish. The interface, that is: the saints stay French.

### Reporting a problem

Post here with your Homey firmware version, the app version, the date concerned, and the first name exactly as you typed it in **Names to watch**. A name the app has to match against the Nominis list is only as good as its spelling, so that is the first thing I will check.

Feedback and testers welcome.

Have fun 😉
