> How does it reduce power on the Easee chargers? I start charging via RFID (the charger is connected to Circle K because it’s a company car). If the charger is paused via the pause function rather than just having its amperage adjusted, I have to scan the RFID card again to resume charging. If the amps are adjusted to 5-6 amps the charger enters a pause state, where RFID is not needed when ramping up the charger again.

PELS uses the standardised Homey interface for commanding EV chargers, which unfortunately pause the chargers. It’s sort of against the intention of how Homey want apps to deal with EV chargers, but changing power limiter behavior for Easee chargers to setting dynamic current to 0A is doable.

This one is a bit more tricky. All modes are made equal today and can be added/deleted freely.

To implement that one mode is a baseline and the other are configured to be relative to that one mode would require a parallel implementation of flows, configuration UI and some parts of the temperature sub-system. Given the size of this particular work, I’d be curious to know how many prefer this way of configuring modes.

Hello @Ole_Markus_With ,

I turned on direct communication with Easee charger as recommended inside the app. Unfortunately PELS was not able to generate Smart Task because it did not see the Kia car. I had to switch back to flows.

Also a note regarding water boiler driven by relay. Is it possible to flag the relay as a water boiler to enable price-based behaviour instead of flows or even add some other smartness. I currently use 8 cheapest hours (22-06 in Norway w/Norgespris).

Hi, thanks for reporting.

Sorry to hear that. In order for PELS to start a smart task with an associated EV, it times the events from the car with the events from the charger to ensure you are not charging elsewhere or that some other car connected to your charger. It may look like KIA app can be a little delayed so the association fails. The current timeout is 90 seconds and it may be as simple as extending that a little. But a diagnostics report would help me know for sure.

It would be very useful if you could send a diagnostics car soon after plugging the car into the charger

Currently, a smart task use either “measured temperature / target temperature” or battery level to track progress and target. A feature I have been thinking about is adding support for smart tasks that aim at feeding a device a specific amount of kW. For a water heater, you would set up a task that aims to feed the heater e.g 16kW between 22 and 06, and then PELS would use the same logic as with EVs and thermostats to distribute those 16kW across the given time period.

Does that make sense? Does this seem like something that would work for you?

Is it possible to set the main fuse size?

“Safe Pace Now” can allow a power level that exceeds the capacity of the main fuse, which could cause it to blow. It would be useful to have the main fuse size as a separate safety limit.

> Is it possible to set the main fuse size?

If the aim is to prevent the main fuse from blowing, there are a few complications:

- PELS largely operates in watts. Converting a fuse size in amps to a power limit depends on the grid type and number of phases.
- PELS could read whole-home current per phase, but it doesn’t know which phase each controlled device is connected to. If one phase is close to its limit, restoring a device on that phase could still blow the fuse.
- Even if PELS only restored controlled loads while there appeared to be enough capacity, an unmanaged load such as an induction hob could start at any time and push the installation over the limit.
- There are also delays. Meter readings can be delayed, and controlled devices such as EV chargers may take some time to react to a command. PELS therefore cannot guarantee that it can react before a fuse trips.

What would be significantly simpler is an instantaneous whole-home power limit in watts. PELS could use that to limit how aggressively it restores or increases controlled loads, effectively putting a ceiling on the safe pace.

That would be a useful constraint, but it should not be presented as main-fuse protection: it would not account for phase imbalance, sudden unmanaged loads, or measurement/control delays.

Hi @Stanga ,

I fixed so Easee chargers are now paused by setting current to 0 A. This should better support users with external connections like Circle K.

This also avoids the 32 A spike that comes from Easee always starting a new session at 32 A regardless of the dynamic current setting.

Release should already be live.

Water heater and amount of energy seems right.

I use use cheap hours priority and found out that my easee charger starts and stops charging the car after few minutes waiting for cheaper hours. That’s not optimal for battery and adds unnecessary charging cycles. Would be nice to select which devices shall use cheapest hours (water heater) and which not.

Thanks for the report. The charger was paused by a smart task on the Easee. A smart task means “reach this battery level by this time, using the cheapest hours that still get there”. So after you plugged in, it charged for a few minutes and then paused, because the next hour was not one the task had picked.

You can already choose this per device: only devices with a smart task wait for cheaper hours. If you don’t want it for the car, remove the task on the charger under Smart tasks. If you have a Flow that runs “Add charging task” when the car is plugged in, remove that card as well, or the task comes back on the next plug-in. Keep Power-limit control on for the charger, and it will charge whenever there is room under your hard cap.

“Use cheaper hours” under the daily budget is a separate whole-home setting and was not what paused the charger.

I’ll look into the amount of energy-based smart task in not too long.

If I understand you correctly, you want to keep the smart task, just without the short charge when you plug in?

You can make the charger run only in the hours the smart task picks: on the charger, turn Power-limit control off and set “Only PELS starts this device” (both toggles are under setup on the device page). PELS still keeps it under your hard cap while it charges, but won’t start it outside the task’s hours. Note that the car then only charges through a smart task. If you start it from the Easee app, PELS switches it back off. Note that if you don’t require authorization for charging in the Easee app, the charger will start a session on its own when you plug in. PELS will turn it off again with the settings mentioned, but there will be a short spike.

I’m not sure yet that this covers what you saw. If the task itself chose to charge for those few minutes after you plugged in, it would still happen, and that would be something that is not intentional. If so, could you turn on Advanced \> Debug logging \> Deadline & objectives before you plug in next time, and send a report if it starts and then pauses again? Then I can see which of the two it was.

Hi,

For both OSO and Hyundai the problem is that they use non-standard way of controlling their devices so they need specific implementations that I typically add, if possible, on a case by case basis.

I looked into OSO earlier, and I think the problem then was that reading on/off state reflects if it is heating or not, while commanding it on and off does the expected thing. This means PELS doesn’t actually know if it has commanded the device on or if it has just hit its target temperature.

For Hyundai, it seems much simpler. PELS expect cars to have the `car` device class, while Hyunai app expose the cars as `vehicle`. If that’s the gap, it should be an easy thing to fix.

Ok, gotcha. The oso is fine for leaving out. It has its own smart feature, unless you somehow implement a whole smart setup of it through an api or something 😮‍💨

Car would be nice to add, if easy fix 😊

How do I connect one easee charger to two cars? Does pels just read what car is charging and if easee also is charging, then use that car for battery percentage?

Also not necessary, but since there’s an option, I’m interested to know 😊

Hi,

I checked the Kia and Hyundai app. It gives the car the vehicle class, and it reports charging state and battery level the standard way. Adding vehicle should therefore be enough to get the Ioniq 5 into the car list, and I’ll add it.

There is one catch. PELS works out which car is on the charger by timing. When the charger reports that a car was plugged in, PELS looks for a car that reported a plug-in within about 90 seconds. By default the Kia and Hyundai app only checks the car every 15 minutes, so the car’s plug-in may reach PELS too late to be matched. I’ll look at whether PELS can accept a later report from the car without risking the wrong match. I am thinking you’d be fairly unlucky if you get an incorrect car match in that 15 min window.

For two cars on one charger, open the charger in PELS and tick both cars under Car. You don’t choose which one is charging. Each time a car is plugged in, PELS matches it to the ticked car that reported a plug-in at the same time. It then uses that car’s battery level until it is unplugged. PELS goes by plug-in rather than charging, because PELS starts and stops charging itself, so charging says little about which car is connected.

A few things follow from that:

- A ticked car plugged in somewhere else, for example at work, isn’t matched, because its plug-in doesn’t line up with the charger’s.
- If both cars report a plug-in at about the same time, PELS can’t tell which one is on the charger and won’t guess. The charger then has no battery level until the next plug-in.

@MichalLam, this is probably also why PELS didn’t see your Kia. It’s the same app with the same vehicle class.

Hi @Ole_Markus_With
I have only one car and it is charged only at home and home charger charges only that car.

I charged the car yesterday. I tried “use built in device control” for Easee charger. Unfortunately there was no feedback from Kia car into PELS. PELS suggests however to choose the car for the charger, but there I cannot choose anything as the car does not show up on charger’s setup page as it does for @Radon. In order to let PELS know battery SOC I have added a flow When: Kia battery level changes Then: Report battery level for Easee Charge Up as Batery (Kia).
Next time I will log the app as you suggested.
One more interesting thing is that I cannot establish Smart Task for charging anymore. It does not show up under New Smart Task widget anymore.

Regarding VVB on/off smart task. I am testing it right now.

@Ole_Markus_With would it be possible to add an AND or IF flowcard like ‘price level will change to “xx” in “yy” hours’ ? Together with the ‘price level is “xx”’ this would give many possibilities! I want to start pre-heating just some hours before pricelevel goes to high, not at the moment it changes to low.
As a background: For some devices I’m not able to just have them managed by PELS as the livingroom thermostat setpoint is lowered if the backdoor is open, and the bathroom will be on ‘low’ already if no-one is at home. The setpoints are either overwritten by PELS, or the price-control is not enabled anymore… If I want to program this all in PELS then I will end up with 7-10 different modes.
