# [APP][Pro] Medication Reminder: reminders until the medication is taken, stock tracking and reports

💊 **Medication Reminder** keeps track of who takes which medication and when. At the planned time it starts a Flow. If nobody confirms the dose, it keeps reminding, alerts a caregiver, and finally records the dose as missed. It also follows the stock, warns before a medicine runs out, expires or a course ends, and makes reports per day, week, month and year.

Free, no account, nothing leaves your Homey.

## 🕗 How it works

A dose goes through a few steps, and you set the minutes per person:

1. **Due:** at the planned time. Everything one person takes at that moment comes in one message: “Time for your medication, Anna: 1 tablet Metformin 500 mg (with food) and 2 drops Vitamin D.”
2. **Reminder:** after a number of minutes, repeated as often as you want.
3. **Caregiver:** still not taken after, say, an hour? A separate trigger, meant for a message to someone else.
4. **Missed:** after the time you set, the dose is recorded as missed.

A flow can also start a chosen number of minutes or hours before the planned time, for example to take an injection out of the fridge in time.

You confirm a dose with the **Taken** button on the device, the dashboard widget, the app settings, or any Flow. So a button next to the pill box, a contact sensor on the medicine cabinet or a voice command can confirm it too. Taking it a little early counts for the coming dose; a dose confirmed shortly after “missed” still counts as taken.

Snooze, pause (for a holiday, without lowering the percentage) and undo are all there.

## 📊 Reports

Per person, over a day, a week, a month or a year:

- the share of doses taken, with missed and skipped doses
- the figures per medicine, so you see which one gets forgotten
- a chart per day, or per month for a year
- a comparison with the period before

One sentence sums it up, ready for a notification or a speaker: “week 43: Anna took 19 of 21 doses (90%). Missed: Metformin 500 mg (2). 4 points better than the period before.”

The app can make the reports by itself on the last day of each period, at a time you choose, and put them in the timeline. Open them any time on the Report tab of the app settings, in a dashboard widget, or with a Flow card.

## ✨ What it does

**Schedules**

- Every day, some days of the week, or every few days
- Several times a day, each with its own amount (half tablets too)
- Start and end date for a course
- “As needed” medicines with a maximum per day and a waiting time between doses; the app refuses an intake that comes too soon, with the reason
- Tablet, capsule, drops, puffs, injection, ml, sachet, patch, spoonful; before, with or after food

**Stock**

- Counts down with every intake
- Warns once when the stock lasts fewer days than you set, and again after a refill
- Warns before the expiry date and two days before a course ends
- Refill with one tap (pack size) or a Flow

**Devices**

- **Person:** status, next dose, the time and number of medicines of the dose to take now, taken today, percentage over 7 and over 30 days, days in a row, and a Taken button
- **Medicine** (optional): stock, days the stock lasts, last taken, and a Taken button

**Dashboard widgets**

- **Medication today:** the list of one person, with buttons
- **Medication report:** a week, month or year with a chart
- **Medication stock:** every medicine with the days it still lasts
- **Medication of everyone:** one line per person, with a Taken button

**App settings:** Today, People, Medicines, Report, Log and Help, plus a backup you can export and import as text.

**Timeline notifications** per person, for the steps you choose.

## 🚀 Getting started

1. Open the app settings, add a person under **People** and their medicines under **Medicines**.
2. Add the person as a device: Devices, +, Medication Reminder, Person.
3. Make a Flow with “It is time for medication” and send the message tag wherever you want: your phone, a speaker, a lamp that changes colour.

The **Send a test** button on the Today tab fires “It is time for medication” right away, so you can try your Flows.

* * *

## 🔒 Privacy and a word of care

Everything stays on your Homey. The app has no account and sends nothing to the internet. It keeps the log for 35 days and the figures per day for 13 months, for the reports, in a compact form: a year of two people with eight medicines takes about 70 kB.

Medication Reminder is a memory aid, not a medical device. It gives no medical advice and does not check doses or interactions. Follow what your doctor or pharmacist says.

Available in English, Dutch, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Polish.

## 📝 Changelog

**1.3.1:** the dashboard widgets open at their full height right away, also after switching back to the Homey app.

**1.3.0:** the Person device shows the time of the dose to take now, or of the next one, and how many medicines it has. A flow can use them to find back a to-do item it made earlier.

**1.2.0:** a new trigger card, “Medication is due in … minutes or hours”, per person, per medicine and for everyone. Thanks to Andy for the idea.

**1.1.1:** new photos for the Person and Medicine devices, and the device names in all ten languages.

**1.1.0:** reports per day, week, month and year with a chart, the figures per medicine and a comparison with the period before, sent at a time you choose. Three new widgets: report, stock and everyone. The caregiver is named in the alert, and the stored data takes far less space.

**1.0.0:** first version.

Hello Danny,

Would it be possible to add a WHEN trigger card from medication due in N minutes/hours?

Example use case, I have an injection I have to self administer at regular intervals, the pre-filled syringes have to be kept refrigerated but need to be removed 1 to 2 hours prior. It would be handy for triggering a couple of reminders earlier in the day, so I don’t forget to take it out.

Thank you for your time and consideration

Andy

Hi Andy,

Good idea, and a clear use case. It is in version 1.2.0, which is now the test version: [Medication Reminder | Homey](https://homey.app/a/be.medicationreminder/test/)

There is a new trigger card **Medication is due in … minutes / hours**. You pick a number and minutes or hours, up to 24 hours ahead. It exists in three forms:

- on the person device, for everything that person takes
- on a medicine device, for that one medicine only (handy for the injection)
- in the app cards for everyone, with the person as a tag

It fires once per dose, at the chosen time before the planned time. If the dose was already taken early, it stays quiet. For your fridge reminder you can make two flows, for example one at 2 hours and one at 1 hour, and the tags give you the medicine and the planned time for the message.

Let me know how it works for you.

Awesome ☺ thank you kindly for this addition, I especially appreciate the touch of if dose taken early it stays quiet… well played good sir 🫡 greatly appreciated. One’s a weekly injection, the other is a once every 12 weeks (and isn’t due again until late November… a while to wait yet ha ha 🤣) But I may have thought of another good use case that I can test daily, once I figure out the logic of the Advanced Flow… will let you know how I get on 👍🏼

Thank you good sir 🫡

Glad it fits, Andy. A tip for the schedules, in case you haven’t set them up yet:

- **Weekly injection:** choose “On some days of the week” and tick the one day.
- **Every 12 weeks:** choose “Every few days” with 84, and set the start date to the next date it is due in November. The app counts the 84 days from that start date, so the next ones follow by themselves.

Curious about the other use case. If the Advanced Flow gets stubborn, post what you have and I’ll have a look.

That’s exactly as I had set them up 😉 thanks

Nothing terribly exciting or difficult to sort out… I am using the WidgetKeeper app’s web dashboard feature to display browser displayed dashboards on devices like the Shelly Wall Display XL (as the Homey app runs like a an absolute pig on it) and now that app has the ability to include other widgets in the web dashboard, I have added a To Do task list from the Lists app, that I can automatically add tasks to (and check off/clear if needed). So I was going to add flows to add “Don’t Forget to take AM Meds” and one for PM, a couple hours before to the list. Then I can either tap the list item on the display to acknowledge taking them and the flow mark them as taken, or mark them as taken and the flow check the reminder off the list.

I also have flows for things like when the washing machine finishes, it adds a Task to remind me to take the laundry out… along with other such appliances. And things like which bins to put out which days. Being able to automatically add these reminders of regular tasks and tick them off when done is very helpful. Then I have a flow that triggers at 11pm every day to clear that days checked off reminders.

Nice setup, and everything it needs is already there. With the person device it comes down to three flows:

1. **Add the reminder:** WHEN _Medication is due in 2 hours_ THEN add the item to your list. The _time_ tag (08:00 or 20:00) tells you whether it is the AM or the PM round, so one flow can name it right, or you make two flows with a time condition.
2. **Tick on the display marks it taken:** WHEN the item is checked off in Lists AND _Has medication to take now_ THEN _Mark medication as taken_.
3. **Taken elsewhere ticks the list:** WHEN _Medication was taken_ THEN check the item off in Lists.

The condition in flow 2 matters. Flow 3 checks the item off, which starts flow 2 again. Without the condition, _Mark medication as taken_ finds nothing open and takes the next dose instead if it falls within the early window of that person (60 minutes by default). With AM and PM far apart it won’t bite you, but the condition keeps the loop harmless either way.

Yes, getting there 😁 the WidgetKeeper app with it’s web dashboards has been a real game changer for setting up my various dashboard control panels… and now this app, combined with the Lists app, has taken my medications management to a whole new level of helpfulness (I had a head injury that was shortly followed by needing chemo, that has really affected my memory… as well as being the reason I now need so many medications ha ha but still alive to tell the tale) so useful tools like this really do make a difference for me, and are extremely helpful… so huge thanks ☺

I will keep testing, and as I live with it for a while, if I have any other suggestions or questions will let you know. Thank you for your time and effort on this app, respect good sir 🫡
