# Grid Green Carbon (France)

_Run the house when the grid is clean._

> Run the house when the grid is clean

French electricity is already low-carbon by European standards, which makes it easy to assume the hour does not matter. It does. On the day I measured it, the grid went from 11 to 41 g of CO2 per kWh within twenty-five hours, a factor of almost four. The dishwasher does not care when it runs, and neither does the car charger as long as the car is full in the morning. This app tells them when.

### Where the data comes from

From **RTE** , the French grid operator, through **éCO2mix** , the national real-time dataset on its open data portal. The carbon intensity is RTE’s own published figure, not something the app derives or estimates. No account and no key needed for that part: install, add the device, done.

The source publishes a point every fifteen minutes, with a delay that varies, I have measured between 16 and 60 minutes. The app reads every fifteen minutes and never asks more often, since nothing new would come back.

Two extras, **EcoWatt** and **Tempo** , come from RTE’s authenticated APIs. They are optional, see below.

### Requirements

- **Homey Pro** running firmware **12.3.0 or newer**. Local only, not available on Homey Cloud.
- An internet connection.
- For EcoWatt and Tempo only: a free account on [data.rte-france.com](http://data.rte-france.com).

### The device

One **French grid** device, nothing to configure.

| Capability | What it tells you |
| --- | --- |
| **Grid carbon intensity** | In g/kWh, as RTE publishes it |
| **Renewable share** | In per cent of current production |
| **Cross-border balance** | In MW, what France is exporting or importing right now |

### Clean compared with what?

It would be convenient to say “below 30 g/kWh is clean”. It would also be invented: nobody publishes such a threshold, and it would make no sense anyway. On a good September day, 30 g/kWh would call half the day dirty; in January the same figure would be a record.

So the app compares the present with the last twenty-four hours. The current reading is ranked against the day’s 96 readings and called **clean** in the lowest third, **average** in the middle third, **loaded** in the top third. “Is the grid cleaner than usual right now?” is a question the data can answer on its own, without a made-up number and without seasonal correction.

If you do want a fixed number, there is a condition card for that too.

### Widget

 ![widgets](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex025/uploads/athom/original/3X/5/7/57d40fbb114ab205836952d9c1837cb5d9455ac2.jpeg)

- **Grid and flows** , the carbon intensity, the grid rated clean, average or loaded, the share of renewables and, if you wish, the day’s Tempo colour. Then the exchanges at each border as bars, and the balance at the foot: “France is exporting 12,345 MW”.

You choose what it shows: Carbon and flows, Carbon only, or Flows only. Backgrounds: Deep blue, Slate, Plum, Forest or Sand.

### Flow cards

Triggers:

- The grid’s carbon level changed
- A low-carbon window starts _(EcoWatt)_
- Tomorrow’s Tempo colour is published _(Tempo)_

Conditions:

- Today’s Tempo colour is [blue / white / red] _(Tempo)_
- The current hour is flagged low-carbon _(EcoWatt)_
- The grid is [clean / average / loaded] right now
- Carbon intensity is below g/kWh

Action:

- Get the grid figures, which returns the carbon intensity, the level, the renewable share and the cross-border balance as tokens.

### EcoWatt and Tempo, optional

**EcoWatt** is RTE’s hourly signal, and it flags the hours when production is not just sufficient but low-carbon. That is the most directly usable signal of the lot, and it is what the “low-carbon window” cards run on. It only exists for today and tomorrow: beyond that RTE does not make the distinction, so the app promises nothing further.

**Tempo** is the colour of the day for the EDF Tempo tariff, blue, white or red. Tomorrow’s colour comes out late in the morning, and the trigger fires when it does.

Both need your own RTE credentials, because EcoWatt allows one call per quarter of an hour per application, and a key shared between every Homey would be exhausted in minutes. Create a free account on [data.rte-france.com](http://data.rte-france.com), declare an application, subscribe it to both APIs, then open the French grid device and choose **Repair** to enter the client ID and secret. They are stored in that device only and deleted with it. If they are missing, refused or out of quota, the carbon intensity keeps working regardless.

### What it does not do

- **France only.** RTE describes the French grid, and the carbon intensity is national, so there is no regional figure.
- It is not live to the minute. A reading more than two hours old is not shown as current: the device says the data is stale rather than letting a Flow start the dishwasher on yesterday’s grid.
- It does not forecast the carbon intensity. The only look-ahead is EcoWatt’s, today and tomorrow.

### Languages

English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish.

### Reporting a problem

Post here with your Homey firmware version, the app version, whether you have entered RTE credentials, and the exact message if the device shows as unavailable. Those messages say which source failed and why, a quota, a missing subscription or a stale reading, and that is usually most of the answer.

Feedback and testers welcome.

Have fun 😉
