**AlphaESS Modbus** controls and monitors an AlphaESS home battery from Homey, entirely locally over Modbus TCP. No cloud, no AlphaCloud account needed.

[[App Store link]](https://homey.app/a/info.schellekens.alphaess/test/)

## What you get

**Two devices per system**

- **Home battery** : charge level, battery power, energy charged/discharged, grid power and energy, max. cell temperature, battery health, inverter state, fault alarm. Shows up as a home battery in Homey Energy.
- **Solar panels** : power, energy today and total generated, for the PV connected to the AlphaESS. Shows up as solar panels in Homey Energy.

Both share one Modbus connection.

**Battery modes** , chosen on the device or by Flow:

| Mode | What the battery does |
| --- | --- |
| Stop | No charging or discharging. The home runs on the grid, solar surplus goes to the grid. |
| Discharge (power, target %) | Discharges at a fixed power down to the target, regardless of home usage. Then waits for a new command. |
| Self-consumption, no charging (min %) | Only covers home usage, down to the minimum. Solar surplus goes to the grid. |
| Self-consumption (min %, max %) | Keeps the grid at zero both ways: stores solar surplus up to the maximum, covers home usage down to the minimum. |
| Self-consumption, no discharging (max %) | Only stores solar surplus, up to the maximum. The home runs on the grid when solar is not sufficient. |
| Charge (power, target %) | Charges at a fixed power (grid + solar) up to the target. Then waits for a new command. |
| Max charge (target %) | Charges at full power from the grid, e.g. at negative prices. Solar on the AlphaESS is switched off. |
| Automatic (AlphaESS) | Hands control back to the AlphaESS itself. |

The modes are built for energy planners (dynamic tariffs): every mode has a language-independent name (STOP, ONTLADEN, NOM\_NIET\_LADEN, NOM, NOM\_NIET\_ONTLADEN, LADEN, MAX\_LADEN, AUTO) and there is a Flow card that takes the mode as text, so tokens from a planner can be passed on directly.

**Flow cards**

- Actions: one card per mode, a “Run battery command” card with all values, solar panels on/off.
- Triggers: battery mode changed, battery command changed (all values as tokens), target charge level reached, inverter state changed.
- Conditions: battery mode is, value is above (charge level, battery/grid power, command values), inverter state is, solar panels are on.

**Safety** : every command is sent with a fallback time (default 5 minutes) and renewed while Homey is running. If Homey or the app stops, the AlphaESS returns to its own automatic mode by itself. The AlphaESS keeps guarding its own minimum charge level as well.

## Requirements

- An AlphaESS system with Modbus TCP enabled on the EMS (port 502, Modbus address 85 by default). Ask your installer if it is not enabled.
- Homey Pro on the same network. When adding the device, the app searches your network for the AlphaESS; you can also enter the IP address yourself. If the IP address changes later, the app finds the system again by its serial number.

## Tested with

**SMILE-G3-T10** V1.06 with DC-coupled solar panels. Other AlphaESS household systems use the same register list and should work; please report your model here, working or not.

## Good to know

- “Self-consumption, no charging” and “no discharging”, and the limits of “Self-consumption”, are regulated by the app every few seconds from the grid and battery power (the AlphaESS has no native mode for these). A small grid target can be set in the device settings.
- Homey shows only one slider per device: that is the target charge level. Power and min/max levels are in the device settings (and set by the Flow cards).
- Mode changes are listed in the device’s activity list.

## 🇳🇱 Nederlandse samenvatting

Beide verschijnen in Homey Energie.

What is the difference with [this](https://homey.app/a/nl.aboreaon.alpaess/) existing AlphaESS modbus app? Might be worth mentioning in your post
